This is another example of the XFL being fiscally responsible. The XFL is paying none of these talents. This is all Disney money. The XFL is not paying the production costs which will be tens of millions nor are they paying the on air talent. McAfee’s deal on this is with ESPN/ABC.

Unlike the AAF, which was paying for all the costs and talent. They still owe Steve Mariucci thousands of dollars. He was costing the league like 20,000 a game for travel, lodging etc

The lineup looks good to me. Replacing Orlovsky with McElroy is probably a push. I do like both. Luginbill is a nice tie-in to the original XFL, though I'm not sure how much that's going to matter. I'm not all that familiar with Tom Hart. As others have said, McAfee should be fun in his role. I can already see it being not for everyone and the hardcore football purists may not end up liking it, but from a presentation standpoint, the XFL does need to set itself apart from the NFL. That's difficult simply because of how much innovation, camera angles, mics, stats, etc. that the NFL has brought to the television viewing experience.

The expectation level for the XFL and how they present the game visually and through audio is high because of how they blazed the trail for all football broadcasts in the last two decades. They are expected to bring something new to the table.

I have no doubt that there will be new innovations. Just from reading extensive articles on the league’s testing. The league is centered on it’s 2020 vision. Kind of a sports league for the future.

So even with all the advancements in technology and broadcasting. The XFL is still going to bring something new to the table. That doesn’t mean that all of it will work. The NFL actually tried a new camera angle for it’s last prime time preseason game. It didn’t go over too well with viewers. Word was that it was something that NFL people saw at the XFL’s testing with the Spring League. They had NFL reps in attendance for a few of them. The NFL also attempts broadcast testing with their pro bowl. They attempted it early this year.

So I expect enhanced audio. New camera angles on the field and around the field of play. Potentially that fish eye view that was seen briefly in the XFL’s testing with TSL. That might be for specific replays. New helmet cam views. The XFL has been using a lot of third party tech people in their game and broadcast testing. For specialized replays and statistic layouts. As well as for monitoring player movements during play.

One of the XFL’s top follows on social media is @actionstreamer

They do a lot of different types of camera angles with players, coaches and even referees on the field. The XFL even posted some of their views used with the Spring League back in April.

There was also this overhead QB to WR view.

How highly anticipated is it? I hope it's something the coaches and players are ready for.....to play a solid game given the new league, new rules, new gimmicks and the fact they're not playing at least one exhibition before the season and the dire need to make that great first impression. In most brand new ventures, there is an expectation of early ragged play.....does the XFL have that luxury or will viewers defect once March madness begins?

The XFL will definitely be playing full scrimmage games with all eight teams in Houston come January. They just won’t be televised for public consumption. It’s good that the league is doing minicamps in December and then the full league wide camp in January. Then all teams have two weeks to prepare at their own facilities for the opener. It will help

To guarantee a year 2, the ratings and attendance need to remain steady. The ratings and attendance will be high for week one, but both need to remain consistent each week. If the ratings go down rapidly from week to week and attendance does as well, the chances of a year 2 is not great. Yes, Vince McMahon is funding the league for three years, but the XFL needs to maintain consistent ratings and attendance each week to guarantee a second year. The last thing the XFL needs is for their championship game to be played in front of only a few hundred people. The ideal scenario is for the championship game to be played in front of 20,000 people. If it's the latter and the league averages between 15,000-20,000 in attendance in all 8 cities, a year 2 is likely. If the league attendance for most of the cities is closer to 1,000 people, there likely won't be a year two.

It's just that scrimmages are not live games. They don't have to be on tv.....just a preseason game for just getting the feel of a real game....you can use starters, backups, just a dress rehearsal if you will.
If you want eventually.....you can hold these preseason dress rehearsal games in non league locales if interest is there.

The XFL is guaranteed to lose money in year one. All start up businesses do. It’s going to cost over a hundred million dollars plus to operate the league in year one.

The key is creating revenue streams that help keep the league afloat moving into year two.

I understand that all start ups lose money in year one. My main concern is how much patience is Vince McMahon going to have if the XFL loses money, and both attendance and ratings start to dwindle. He is known to be extremely impatient and does things on a whim without any rhyme or reason.
