(Update) The XFL’s Eight Assigned Quarterbacks

Post by LeoNY »

Greg Parks mentioned this in a previous thread. Mark Berman of Fox26 in Houston is reporting that Former Temple and Colts Quarterback Phillip Walker will be announced as the Tier 1 Quarterback for The Houston Roughnecks. Here is the tweet below.

The full list of assigned quarterbacks is supposed to be announced tomorrow but so far. Here’s what the list presumably looks like.

Dallas Renegades- Landry Jones
Houston Roughnecks- Phillip Walker

Two Texas teams. No Manziel. Not impossible that another team is assigned Johnny but it’s not looking good for him.

ESPN released an article early today listing the names of Matt McGloin, Luis Perez and Brandon Silvers as being quarterbacks in the league despite them not being listed in the XFL’s draft pool. So purely going on speculation. It could be:

New York Guardians- Matt McGloin (Not entirely local but played at Penn State. Has northeast ties)

Los Angeles Wildcats- Luis Perez (Perez also has ties to the region)

Not sure where Brandon Silvers would fit. Tampa maybe?

I would think that Conner Cook would be the QB for the St. Louis BattleHawks since he has ties to the Cincinnati Bengals and coach Hayes who was a coach there when Cook was on the team and worked together.

I wouldn’t make the assumption that quarterbacks are being assigned based on region.

Phillip Walker, if he doesn’t end up back in the NFL before this season ends, is New Jersey born and raised. Yet he lands in Houston according to this report.

What that tells me is that June Jones and his front office had Walker high on their priority list.

When you look at Phillip Walker. He fits the profile of a potential XFL Quarterback. A young QB who slips through the cracks undrafted, is undersized at 5’11 and has bounced back and forth on a practice squad his first few years in the NFL. Walker was on the Colts practice squad earlier this year for the third year in a row.

It could be the case but the thing is Phillip Walker, Landry Jones, Brandon Silvers and Matt McGloin all have the same thing in common. They weren’t listed in the draft pool. Connor Cook was. Same for Marquise Williams and Zach Mettenberger.

Conner Cook is also from the Midwest and attended the St.Louis showcase in which coach Hayes was interviewed and said that we was very impressed with him after the workouts.

It could be Cook but here’s the thing. His name was in the draft pool. Now the XFL could decide to assign names from the pool but Walker and Jones were separate from the pool.
