They should have at least finished out the season out of respect for the fans, players, coaches and everybody else involved with their league. Sad to see this happen, good thing the XFL has legit funding from Vince McMahon...

For the AAF too bad. Suffer, the players and coaches will. The fans too.

These are obviously Team Ebersol sources, but buying a company for its technology and then closing operations is not "stealing." Did Dundon buy the IP or not? But if that was the plan, he could have just done that -- he didn't need to blow $50 million funding Weeks 3-8.

I wonder why Charlie and Bill aren't taking a beating on social media like Dundon is. Sure, Dundon is the guy who may be "folding" the league, but didn't Charlie tell us they were funded for 5 years when they announced? Apparently it was only "pledged" funding for 5 years.

And it sounds like the goal of Pollian was to last 3 years before going "NFL lite". Not what I heard at the beginning.

Maybe Dundon wants the tech, as has been suggested, but he also didn't want to lose $250 million over 3 years to find out if the NFL would help out.

I had an uneasy feeling about the AAF from the start...like I was being sold a used car with the rust painted over and the bumper glued on. It looked good, but... I'm glad I didn't buy.

The suspension of operations comes from majority owner Tom Dundon ceasing his funding of the league. But the league could continue (in theory), if the AAF finds someone else to step in and pay for the rest of the inaugural season. A source with knowledge of the situation told PFT on Monday night that the estimated investment necessary for the rest of the season would be $20 million.

For now, players under contract to the AAF remain under contract to the AAF, in the event that funding emerges and the season can be finished. At some point, however, those players will have to be released from their contracts — especially if they aren’t getting paid.

Perception inside the AAF is that Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon bought a majority stake in the league simply for the gambling app being developed.

Source: "Dundon got the technology he wanted and he's now minus one rather large headache."

"Actually, this is a good thing for the league."

r/AAF_football, probably.

Seriously, this is pretty shocking. I remember after 1 week hearing mainstream media outlets buying into the viability of spring football. On one hand, this is worrying as an XFL fan. On the other hand I'm cautiously optimistic knowing that one of the biggest factors that killed the AAF won't apply to the XFL: being too heavily dependent on investors with no real attachment to the league, they just want an quick return on investment.

This makes a lot of sense given the language Dundon used all along. From day one he talked about the league being mismanaged. Then the stuff about the NFLPA which left everyone asking "why make such a bold statement?" It seems Dundon probably never wanted the NFLPA's cooperation to begin with, he was just setting the stage to declare the league financially unviable and wash his hands of it.

“Everybody wanted to play out the season and everybody is disappointed,” said Spurrier, who came out of semi-retirement and was the first head coach named by the AAF. “Everyone was led to believe that the Alliance was well funded and we could play three years without making and money and this, that and the other. Obviously, everything that was said was not very truthful.”

Spurrier added the league hasn't officially shut down yet.

“It isn't official until it's official,” Spurrier said.

The league is expected to make an announcement about its future at 5 p.m.

The AAF will announce its suspending operations on Tuesday at 5 p.m. ET
The announcement comes just weeks after Tom Dundon sunk $70 million in cash into the upstart football league.
The AAF only has had eight weeks of competition, with four more remaining, including the Championship Game. Jeff Sherman from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook said they would refund all futures bets made on which team would win AAF Championship Game.
