City of Toronto cancels all major outdoor events through September 6

https://3downnation.com/2021/05/14/city ... ptember-6/

>> The CFL is hoping to have fans in the stands in a significant number of stadiums across the country in time for an August 5 kickoff, but it looks increasingly like Toronto won’t be one of those venues.

City officials issued a news release early Friday, cancelling permits for all major outdoor events in July and August. The release extends cancellations that were already in effect until June 30.

“To continue to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help provide predictability to major event organizers, the City of Toronto is extending the cancellation of in-person City-led and City-permitted outdoor events to September 6,” the statement read. <<

Geez. CFL must be really disappointed. As will be CFL players that could have opted for TSL if CFL delays till Sept.

Quite a different tone from this article on Toronto and the one I just read on Sask. about them aiming for a full stadium this year. While that might be a little too optimistic they are certainly painting a brighter picture.

It’s looking more and more like any CFL 2021 season is going to have potentially half of their teams having little or no fans, at least to start, while the other half might be closer to the level of fans the league was hoping for. Not really a surprise as it’s kind of what I was envisioning for an XFL 2021 season. Had there been one, it probably would have had little or no fans for LA, SEA, NY, DC, while more fans obviously for HOU, DAL, STL, TB. At least this is how I had a 2021 season pictured if the markets were to have remained the same.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto FC: "So we're never coming home are we?"

I wonder if the fat lady is starting to warm up here. No games in 3 markets (Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto) until at least mid-September. BC and Montreal are looking slightly more promising but do those owners really want to play with just 2500-5000 in the stands? Will players accept a 50% pay cut for half the games? We know TSN isn't going to help prop the league up either.

The XFL and co. should just play the long game and see how this all shakes out. At the moment the XFL is a handful of executives on zoom meetings. The CFL is a 50+ year league, with millions of fans, and thousands of employees potentially out of a job. The XFL really has nothing to lose by waiting a few months to see what the CFL decides to do. At that point spend the next 16 months aggressively marketing a new XFL/CFL partnership in 2023.

Note that the cancellation JUST covers the city of Toronto, not the whole province of Ontario.

If by some miracle Doug Ford lets up on the restrictions for the rest of the province and lets the games go on, the league could do what it did a couple of times last decade and move the Argonauts home games to other markets. Putting Toronto onto an island would definitely put pressure on the city government.

I feel bad for the Raptors, Blue Jays and Toronto FC. The way things are going, the Blue Jays and Toronto FC are probably staying in the US for the rest of the year and the Raptors may have to start next season in the US as well.

The last time these three teams played in Toronto:

- Toronto FC- September 25th 2019 vs. Montreal
- Blue Jays- September 29th 2019 vs. Tampa Bay
- Raptors- February 28th 2020 vs. Charlotte

Toronto will have 500k people in the streets in a month when the Leafs make it to the conference finals or 2021 league semis as they will call it.
