NFL Practice Squad/Futures Contracts Tracker 2021

Post by GregParks »

I'm not quite sure WHY I'm doing this since the XFL doesn't kick off until 2022 (boredom probably), but it might give us an idea about what players could be available in the fall. Obviously any player who isn't signed to a futures deal can always be picked up over the summer as training camp depth with an NFL team, too. I did this last year (https://www.xflboard.com/xfl-board/view ... f=2&t=2136) and a dozen practice squad players who weren't signed to futures contracts ended up in the XFL.

So once again, here are the practice squad players who ended the season on each non-playoff team (I'll add the playoff teams as they're eliminated). Teams can begin signing players to futures contracts the day after the end of their season - after a week, practice squad contracts expire and the players become free agents. The names in bold will be those signed to futures deals with that team. Sometimes teams will sign other street free agents to futures contracts too; I'll include them as well. I'll also indicate if an XFL team has that player's rights, just in case the league restarts with players reverting back to their former teams.

There are a few PS players who are older and may choose to retire.

Do you have any specific names in mind?

Because while the NFL did expand practice squads to include veteran players this year, most are still made up of rookies and first-year players with a few three, four or five-year vets sprinkled in. I think I saw one player in creating this list that has been around for 11 years, but none easily identified as "retirement" candidates.

Alex Boone came out of retirement this year and finally got on a team, joining the Hawks PS two weeks ago and getting an elevation for week 17 (was on the field for the final two snaps) but isn't expected to be part of the playoff roster, thus is probably a candidate to head back.

Not on this list, but among the playoff teams: Chiefs QB Matt Moore.

Bumped - updated with Super Wild Card weekend losing teams. All non-playoff teams have made their reserve/futures signings, indicated in bold. First impressions: Lots of veterans on practice squads were not picked up for 2021; and lots of XFL players were not signed to futures deals. That of course doesn't preclude them from a signing a futures contract with ANOTHER team at some point.

Bumped to include the practice squads of this weekend's losing teams. I'll update throughout the week as their futures signings are announced.

So with Tampa and KC having made their reserve/futures signings today, that covers all 32 teams. As the offseason continues, players can still be added/subtracted from the offseason roster so this is by no means final, but it gives us a good idea of some of the higher-level players who could be available to XFL teams this summer.

I highly doubt Matt Moore or Drew Stanton will be in the XFL in 2022. Both are 36 years old, with Stanton turning 37 in May. It means that Stanton would be 38 as soon as the 2022 season ends. If we do see one of the two, it's likely Moore as a coach in the XFL. Moore had been doing some coaching in high school and scouting for the Dolphins before he returned to the Chiefs in 2020. Also from what I have read, he spent most of this last season as an unofficial QB coach anyways.

0% chance we see Drew Stanton and Matt Moore play in the XFL next year, although I would not count Moore out in the XFL as a coach.
