Two vaccines out in record time thanks to USA admin and this fear porn needs to go away.MarkNelson wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 4:05 pm CFL needs to play in 2021 or I’m sure it’s over for the league. It’s probably good they did not play this year, because Covid is raging across Canada now, and in all CFL cities.
Get that vaccine out. Roll it out and the virus will wane. Then CFL training camps can begin next May-June as normal.
Teams need revenue. Players, coaches and staff need jobs.
Bottomline the virus is 95% of fatalities over 50yo, 80% over 65. Focus on that group and the rest can tough it out (like a bad flu season which isnt perfect) or wont notice they have it.

I think you mean Winnipeg, Edmonton and Saskatchewan. Calgary is owned by the same corporation that owns the NHL's Flames.GDAWG wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 11:46 pmWinnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton all have the same ownership structure as the Green Bay Packers.johnnyangryfuzzball wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 7:27 pmKeep in mind, though, that big cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are what give the CFL the veneer of being more than just another AAF or UFL, lumbering around in small cities playing second-tier football until their financiers run out of money. You lose teams like them, and you basically have a minor league with a cult following... and minor league football isn't exactly profitable. Nor do networks particularly care to pay for small-market football; even in Canada, perhaps especially so, they're going to want those big cities.Tank55 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 10:23 pm
The Montreal Gazette just said the same thing. I haven't been paying super close attention, but I guess I'm sort of surprised it's that dire? I could see the Alouettes or the Argonauts going under, but these teams with dedicated stadiums? I can't really wrap my head around that.
BC's owner just died. MLSE (the Argos owners) has made it clear they'd rather have an NFL team (they backed Bon Jovi's bid on the Bills). Montreal's fan support is fading fast, and it's not the first time the fickle Quebecois have walked away from their own teams.
That leaves Ottawa (doing surprisingly well), Hamilton (hanging in there), Winnipeg (whose ownership structure shouldn't even be legal), Saskatchewan (class of the league in terms of fan support but a tiny market), Calgary and Edmonton. The Atlantic bid is once again flailing in the winds. Now, you still would have the Southern Ontario market with Hamilton, but their rivals would be gone. I'm not sure you can sustain a league with that kind of lineup.
Winnipeg operates as some nebulous organization that nobody owns any ownership stake in. It's not a sole proprietorship, partnership or corporation. There are no shares, no controlling interests... it just... exists. If it were to fold, they couldn't liquidate the assets.
Edmonton and Saskatchewan use the Green Bay model, in that at least there are shareholders and shares.

The EE Football Team -- formerly known as the Eskimos -- are soliciting suggestions for a new team name: https://www.esks.com/name
Maybe the Edmonton Elk? Indigenous to Alberta, and obviously something that starts with an E lets you keep the logo.

They had said they were staying with eskimos as there never was any significant issues with the name among any group. Then they caved to mob. It was a cool name - shame.Tank55 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 23, 2020 5:32 pm The EE Football Team -- formerly known as the Eskimos -- are soliciting suggestions for a new team name: https://www.esks.com/name

How about the Edmonton Explorers? Or just Edmonton E?

Owners considering cutting team payroll to salary floor
https://3downnation.com/2020/11/24/cfl- ... -2021/amp/According to sources, the league’s power brokers and presidents are discussing and working to execute an idea to limit total player compensation, even if the union doesn’t want to amend the current collective bargaining agreement. The CFL and CFLPA haven’t talked about player compensation for next year, yet.
The current CBA runs until the beginning of training camp in the spring of 2022. Included in the current framework is a salary cap of $5.35 million. It’s never been identified that the minimum expenditure for teams around the league was set at $4.75 million for 2021. That’s exactly how franchises can save $600,000 each and $5.4 million total without any negotiation.

Extremely wise. Penny pinching is not bad in a touch environment and they still get 85%Tank55 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 25, 2020 10:46 am Owners considering cutting team payroll to salary floor

Explorers is solid. Just saw someone suggest Edmonton Eddies on Twitter. Apparently there's a military connection of some sort, but I think it's also pretty good on its own, sort of like Philadelphia Phillies. I think that's my new favorite.

Eddies is cool, but I am thinking about it being an nickname, like the "Tabbies" or the "Stamps".
