http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-p ... n-the-nfl/During his Roger Goodell–mandated suspension from the Saints, Payton spent his time coaching his son’s sixth-grade pee wee football team, the Liberty Christian Warriors, who eventually went to the league championship game. The Warriors lost just two games all season, but both of those losses came against the same team, the Springtown Orange Porcupines.
For those familiar with Sean Payton, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he took this seriously (well, at least mostly seriously). After losing to the Porcupines 38-6 in the regular season, Payton enlisted the help of some rather noteworthy former NFL coaches to help devise a plan that could slow down Springtown Orange’s offense. It didn’t work: Payton’s Warriors lost 58-18.
After the game, a gracious Payton spoke to both teams. “We spent all week, we talked to Bill Parcells and Jon Gruden and asked them how to defend the single wing,” said Payton. “You have no idea how much time we spent. You guys put 58 points on the board.”

That would be incredible. Here's a fun article: When Sean Payton was banned from the NFL, he coached a Pop Warner team. A team that ran a Single Wing kicked his ass twice.

The "Single Wing" should be ran by an XFL team. How amazing would that be? They would be a pretty entertaining team...

Re: XFL Offensive Style
This is great...from the article:
Youth football and the NFL are obviously night-and-day different; it’s laughable to suggest that because the single wing won a sixth-grade championship it could win a Lombardi Trophy, so laughable that no one would suggest it. No one, that is, except Vince Lombardi: “What would happen if someone came out with the single-wing offense?” Lombardi once asked. “It would embarrass the hell out of us.” And Lombardi wasn’t alone. Roughly 20 years later, fellow Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh once said he’d “reflected on the single wing,” and, in his view, “those blocking schemes would just chew up NFL defenses. You could double-team every hole and trap every hole.”

Dude, i'd be all in on whichever team had the balls to do that. Someone go find Tom Osborne and Eric Crouch and get that I back option offense rolling in here as well.
Barry Switzer needs to be rolled out of whatever nursing home he's in and dust off the wishbone playbook as well, just saying..

Good to see some "single wing" in the SB. It would really be great to see some more in the XFL!

The Super Bowl was such a great showcase for the sport. Air Raid QB, old school power running (a fullback scored a touchdown!), Mills concept on the would-be play of the game, a single wing look. Diversity in styles makes for a richer product. I hope Paul Johnson and Steve Spurrier are on the shortlist for 2021 coaching targets.
Side note: I think a compelling Super Bowl is good for the XFL. Leaves fans wanting more.

Very true. I personally love teams like Baltimore, New England and SF using traditional power sets and fullback based schemes. The blocking FB and TE is a dying breed.Tank55 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 11:09 am The Super Bowl was such a great showcase for the sport. The chiefs ran some option and even a single wing play that chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy apparently took from the 48 or 49 rose bowl game between Michigan and USC, and it was great. I hope we see some creative offenses using some of those concepts, like the ravens do, during the season.
