Official: 4 of 8 USFL teams to survive merger with XFL

The USFL informed its players association that four of the USFL's eight teams would survive. Three of the four (Birmingham, Memphis and Michigan) had stadiums in their home cities in 2023. Houston is the lone exception.

NJ Generals, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers, and New Orleans Breakers get the boot.

I don’t necessarily trust the source but I found it confirmed here.

Oh man super wellness check on our buddy Angelo now :D

I wanted a 12 teamer with six of each, but if it's not feasible to do it right now it's not feasible.

So the 4 Xs in one div and the 4 (Uncle) Sams in the other, make this easy. ESPN and ABC get X games, FOX gets the US, and a split of inters (probably by home team since it's not like they started with home blackouts or anything) is what I'd do.

Well its looking like the late Nov rumor is coming true... at least 50%.

My immediate speculation on the rumor was 8 teams, and called all but one. It just made sense.

>> - COMPOSITION/HUB STATUS already posted but: If 8 Teams (60% chance): DALLAS, ST L, HOUSTON (Gamblers or Roughnecks) DC
MICH NJ MEMPHIS BIRMINGHAM
This covers 16.7% of US households. Dallas Birm Memphis hubs with games also played in DC, St L
~
Also SA may get the nod over Houston due to weather concerns and SA having no NFL/MLB/NHL team - Plus that dome makes weather moot and broadcasting more consistent.<<

While not having a NY area team, that a TV league should not be lacking, is a bit surprising... we can hope for next season along with who? Maybe?

More on the USFLPA informing players...

>> Other Rumors

In addition to this news, here are some other pieces we’ve been hearing. Note: none of this is officially confirmed by the leagues – but it’s news we are expecting to hear when the announcement is made.

The four XFL markets to remain would be:

Arlington Renegades
DC Defenders
San Antonio Brahmas
St. Louis Battlehawks

We are also being told that the new head coach in Memphis is likely going to be a former USFL head coach – either John DeFilippo (Breakers), or Mike Riley (Generals). Divisions in the new “UFL” (United Football League) are currently set to keep their “USFL” and “XFL” names.

The XFL utilized a “hub system” in Arlington during their 2023 season, where all 8 teams were located at and around Choctaw Stadium. We are expecting a similar scenario in 2024. <<

Keeping Arlington is going to be a mistake because nobody is going to attend a Renegades home game in Mid May when the temperature is 100. San Antonio has a dome, so that would not be a problem. It could also be a problem in Houston if NRG proves too expensive for the league. Night games are the only options for Renegades and Gamblers to avoid a mid afternoon summer heat.

Some pretty rough comments from readers out in the Burgh. Never thought Pittsburgh was a good idea to bring back, they were one and done and pretty terrible in the first USFL.

Your point is valid. Too bad climate was not part of how decisions will be made. If it was, then Seattle has great weather at that time of the year. Aside from this topic, I don't understand how these owners make decisions. I do not believe they have the right leadership in place.
