XFL Coaching Staffs

Post by MikeMitchell »

During the last week, Oliver Luck gave an actual number to the amount of coaches that each XFL staff will have. The NFL has upwards of 20 plus assistants including the head coach. Luck mentioned that the XFL coaching staffs will have 11 including the head coach. So their staffs will be smaller, and in turn their could be some coaches pulling double duty.

A normal staff, not counting multiple assistants per position, looks something like this;

(1) Head Coach
(2) Offensive Coordinator
(3) Defensive Coordinator
(4) Special Teams Coordinator
(5) QB Coach
(6) RB Coach
(7) WR Coach
(8) TE Coach
(9) OL Coach
(10) DL Coach
(11) LB Coach
(12) DB Coach

Since The XFL plans on having only 11 coaches per staff. There could be some staffs where the OC doubles as the QB coach as well. Or an assistant coaches both WR's and TE's or Offensive Lineman and Tight Ends etc

In the NFL and in college football, large staffs usually have assistants for each position coach, and at times, certain positions are split up between assistant coaches. Like some coach may be responsible for the outside linebackers, while another coaches the inside backers. There are also some staffs with coaches just for the safeties or defensive tackles. Some NFL staffs have multiple coordinators. A run game coordinator and a pass game coordinator, on both offense and defense.

The XFL is obviously not going in this direction. Based on the length of their season or for budgetary reasons.
