Falcons reach out to Sea Dragons' Haslett for DC

Post by 4th&long »

>> With Dean Pees announcing his retirement Monday, the Falcons are immediately beginning their search for his replacement. According to KOA 850 in Colorado, the Falcons have reached out to veteran defensive coach Jim Haslett.

Haslett, 67, is currently preparing to coach the XFL's Seattle Sea Dragons for the 2023 season.<<

It's hard to see the XFL agreeing to this this late in the process.

Remember in fall '19, the NFL approached a few of the league's starting QBs about taking backup jobs (I recall the Steelers being interested in bringing back Landry Jones) but the XFL said no.

That said, there's still redundancy in the system, considering Arlington essentially has two coaching staffs right now. It wouldn't take much to shift June Jones to HC, and move some of the duplicate staffers in Arlington to the Dragons'. (I'm not adding "Sea" unless absolutely necessary.)

XFL doesn’t need to agree. Unless there’s something out of the ordinary in the contract, they can’t stop coaches from leaving.

That's literally what a contract does. This isn't college.

If Haslett is under contract, he's obligated until he's either fired or the contract expired.

I get the connection, but it was only for one year (plus Fontenot was years ago pre-Payton) and Smith's already got a couple of potential in-house replacements. Lateral move (would-be), quite frankly for both.

That said, I totally wouldn't mind Jones moving up to HC from this.

I seriously doubt the contract prevents leaving XFL for NFL.

Do I really need to provide examples of professional coaches leaving for different jobs before they are fired or their contracts expired? No high profile cases jump to mind?

Depending, we don’t know the details of it. There maybe an out for if an NFL team calls. Luckily Seattle could likely withstand losing him since they have June Jones

Jones is 69 years old and should spend time with his grandkids, Enjoy his sunset years instead of running a football team. Seattle should find a younger replacement instead of using a rethread
