Las Vegas Review Journal: XFL has selected Vipers venue, contract being worked out

Lots of questions about why the XFL chose Las Vegas floating around among fans. Russ Brandon and Dwayne Johnson try to answer them in this story. Most importantly from the story:
The Vipers still haven’t formally announced where they will play games when the season starts in February, but sources close to the league indicate their preferred venue has been selected and contractual details are being worked out.

If it's their preferred venue being selected, it's probably Allegiant, because Cashman seems like a backup option, a plan B.

>> “Vegas was very important to us,” Johnson said at UFC Apex this week. “It’s a critical part of our league. We always had our eyes on Vegas. We grew up together in the WWE, and Vegas was home to a lot of big events for us in WWE, so there has always been a special love for the city.

“As we were setting the league up, we looked across the board at all the cities that made sense for a variety of reasons and Vegas was always at the top.” <<

They try and fail, they provided few answers. To me it was likely travel distance and a dome. At this point the stadium can be anyone. Alliegient is just a matter of $$$ if the want in there - they can cough up the cash, if not Cashmen will do. I've been inLV in Feb / March, it can get cold that might be a factor.

I think the XFL went to Vegas to partner with the casino/gambling industry. It's conceivable the vipers could get a high 6 figure sponsorship by one of the casinos on the strip, possibly even some league wide sponsors to put patches on the uniforms. The IFL, WNBA, and USL soccer teams are all drawing near sellout crowds to their games in a crowded sports market, I feel the Vipers will find a solid niche of 18-20k a game when all is said and done.

Do they need LV to partner with the gambling industry? If they had a deal wouldn't they have slurged on Alleigient?

Who knows what their attendance will be - UNLV does about 12-20k right?

Not necessarily with the gambling industry, but for individual casinos, sure. They could also comp out tickets to patrons at the casinos, which at least increases game day revenue even if tickets aren't "sold". As for any potential deal, who knows? The league didn't announce the ZipRecruiter sponsorship. Also, the majority of XFL 2.0 and USFL sponsorship deals took place in the proverbial 11th hour.

If the XFL gets sponsorship deals, it will be with companies either owned by or affiliated with the Rock.

They'll go with whoever pays them. I don't think ZipRecruiter has any relationship with The Rock, yet they sponsored the draft. I'm sure we'll see a few beer sponsors and car companies on board soon enough

"their preferred venue has been selected and contractual details are being worked out"

I like how that's presented as progress, when surely they had a preference months ago and what's always been missing is the contract.
