Draft roundup from the XFL - additional QBs selected

Post by MarkNelson »

From the XFL:
XFL COMPLETES FINAL DAY OF DRAFT IN LAS VEGAS
442 players along with 22 quarterbacks to start training camp in January 2023

LAS VEGAS (November 17, 2022) – The XFL today completed the final day of XFL Draft Week, presented by ZipRecruiter, at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. A full list of draft selections is attached to this email.

Day two featured the three rounds of Specialists selections (kicker, punter, long snapper), followed by open rounds for all positions.

This followed day one on Wednesday, which was broken into four positional groupings featuring 11 rounds of selections for each skill: Offensive Skill positions (WR, RB, TE, FB), Defensive Backs (CB, Safety, Nickel), Defensive Front Seven (ILB, Edge, DE, DT), and Offensive Line (LT, LG, C, RG, RT).

Of the 442 non-quarterback players selected this week, 285 come with NFL experience (signed an NFL active roster and/or practice squad contract).

273 XFL player selections came from the past three NFL draft classes (171 were eligible for the 2022 NFL Draft, 33 were eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft, and 69 were eligible for the 2020 NFL Draft).

The league’s rosters also include 69 players who will be returning to the XFL from 2020.

Following the Quarterback Selection Show on Tuesday, XFL teams also selected the following quarterbacks today, with additional quarterbacks expected to be chosen in the supplemental draft.

XFL TEAM FIRST LAST COLLEGE
ARLINGTON Kevin Anderson Fordham
DC PASS
HOUSTON Cole McDonald Hawaii
LAS VEGAS PASS
ORLANDO Mitch Kidd Redlands
SEATTLE Brian Lewerke Michigan State
ST. LOUIS Nick Tiano Chattanooga
SAN ANTONIO Reid Sinnett San Diego
SAN ANTONIO Jack Coan Notre Dame

League and team personnel evaluated nearly 6,000 players at XFL showcases, NFL training camps, tryouts and via film. The top prospects from these evaluations were invited to enter the XFL Draft pool of 1,700 players vying for 528 spots in training camp and 400 active player roster spots.

A supplemental draft will be held in early January 2023 for players who were not eligible for this week’s draft, including players who are currently under contract with other professional football leagues. Eligible players who were not selected in this week’s draft will also be available in the supplemental draft.

So are all 8 teams going to add more QBs? Or just DC and Vegas?

IMO, I think most if not all the teams will add at least one more. I’m not convinced that every team has their starter yet. Obviously, it’s going to depend on who becomes available in January. Certainly Benkert, Hundley, Ta’amu, and Scott will draw interest if available. That’s not counting any current practice squad NFL qbs. There’s 6-10 currently on teams that are starting to look like they are going to miss the playoffs. Obviously, not all or most will sign with the XFL but some could. I could see Josh Johnson being interested as well as perhaps Nathan Peterman because of his past Buffalo/Brandon connection. More qbs, many with more experience than what the league even currently has could become available.
I fully expect King to end up in DC. As it stands, I think the XFL has a good group currently in place but we know more is coming.
In this last group of assigned quarterbacks Cole McDonald is the most intriguing for me. I believe he could have a real shot at being Houston’s starter.

I don't want Nathan Peterman in the XFL. If he goes to the XFL, he would automatically be the worse QB in the XFL. Peterman would only add to the criticism that alternative football can't produce any NFL QBs. The XFL needs QBs who can play well enough to gain NFL interest and maybe end up like Taylor Heineicke and (to a lesser degree) PJ Walker.

I certainly understand your opinion on Peterman and I wasn’t suggesting the XFL should sign him. Because he was drafted by Buffalo during the Brandon era gives him an instant connection to the XFL, so a signing there isn’t unreasonable. His performances his rookie year were horrible no doubt.

However, he has been rostered or on a practice squad every year of his 6 year NFL career. Three different teams had something they liked about him. Like it or not, he’s an NFL qb and has been, not a reflection of the XFL. One of the purposes for these leagues is to DEVELOP talent as most qbs in alt football leagues have struggled at times during their careers, or needed to play more. If an XFL team feels he’s worth a shot and has matured then I’m fine with it.
If he succeeds then the XFL succeeds, if he doesn’t then a few weeks in the XFL doesn’t equal the 6 years he spent in the NFL. So then I think that would say more about the NFL.

It's likely that Peterman serves the role of "unofficial QB coach" as some of these PS QBs are in that while he's terrible as a QB, he's great in the film room
