Quite a few surprises.

We'd heard the rumors of McCarron (fun fact: Russ Brandon had brought him to Buffalo briefly in 2018, hence why he was on the XFL radar), and we'd been waiting to see where Perez and Sloter ended up but never heard anything from the league until now. And though it's no surprise, it doesn't look like Cardale Jones made the cut.

Good to see Perez back in the XFL fold. Though it appears Ta'amu won't be.

Not necessarily. Mike Mitchell on the Markcast today says that more QB's could be taken in the open round of the draft on Thursday and in the supplemental draft in January, which means that Ta'amu could be available for the latter.

Sloter one especially curious since he just did an AMA on the official USFL discord last month.

Reasons for leaving aside, this is for sure a blow to USFL. QB quality always seems an issue in these spring leagues and replacing these guys no sure thing.

Rest of the draft should be interesting. Wonder if we should just operate under the assumption any USFL player who got a release for an NFL workout/camp invite/practice squad add, etc. is fair game.
Nick,
Sloter was already a free agent when he signed to NFL camp this summer. The USFL lost him then. He's a free agent. The XFL is said to be paying more and at his age he'd going for the money. Maybe he also would have stayed if Fedora was still there if he liked him, but money talks and he left. He tends to get banged up too, so that may be why USFL decided to pass on him.
So wait, which is it? He left for more money or USFL passed on him? If it’s the latter, why would the USFL promote an AMA on their Discord of a guy they didn’t want back in late October?
Just possibilities. They could have offered X and he said no and they passed. It could have been a recent decision, lets face it the XFL is playing catchup, its likely a recent offer.

I just noticed this - it could mean nothing or something: Each of the eight teams selected one QB that had been working with Jordan Palmer, and one that wasn't. DC only selected one, but their second would've been D'Eriq King, who worked with Palmer.

Apparently, another USFL name about to jump is Paxton Lynch:

There seems to be a lot of good QBs out there willing to give secondary leagues a try. Good news for both the XFL and USFL.

Woodson's statement was in the press release the XFL released a few minutes after the live reveal.
LAS VEGAS VIPERS
Jalan McClendon (Baylor) & Luis Perez (Texas A&M-Commerce)

“Las Vegas is about entertainment and competition. Our QB group is going to bring just that with Jalan McClendon and Luis Perez,” said Vegas Vipers head coach Rod Woodson. “Jalan is going to be a solid athletic QB weapon for us because of his football IQ and ability to read defenses. Luis has a strong arm and accuracy that has landed him opportunities in NFL rookie minicamps. Luis had solid results playing in other leagues, and the Vipers are lucky to have him aboard. Jalan and Luis are what this league is about – competitiveness to get to the next level.”
