johnnyangryfuzzball wrote: Mon Aug 15, 2022 5:12 pm As I understand it, the option clause is out of the players' control. The USFL can and will be blocking any player under contract in 2022 from joining the XFL in 2023.
According to reports. The original USFL contract was bilateral. It was a player option for whether or not they wanted to sign in for a second year. Players who were signed later in the year had the option year clause as mandatory.
The only way out of contracts is signing with the nfl and that only gets you out of the contract if you signed the first contract. A few players have said this in interviews and it’s been heavily reported
There are players that didn’t sign the option clause in the original contract. So they are free to sign anywhere they like if they didn’t.

It isnt a player option for year 2 it is a league option as the players have said…the ones in the nfl may be free to sign to whoever if they get released but it’ll depend on which contract they signed but the ones not signed by the nfl will be returning due to the contract

Not if originally contracted players didn’t sign the original bilateral option clause in their contract. The mandatory second year wasn’t implemented until later in the season.

It's a standard form contract. They don't get to pick and choose which clauses to sign, and that clause was in all contracts from the beginning (though the NFL loophole wasn't closed until later).

Agreed Johnny. And a bit more clearly stated than I had.

The option year wasn’t automatic for originally signed USFL players. This is from NewsHub in May.

“Sources have indicated that some agencies with players already signed to their original USFL contract before the season have opted out of signing the bilateral option clause”.

Leo - You are miss reading it.

>> Sources have indicated that some agencies with players already signed to their original USFL contract before the season have opted out of signing the bilateral option clause. And as a result, their clients will be free to sign with any league they choose if an NFL opportunity does come along and if said player doesn’t make an NFL roster this summer/early fall.

The original agreement had the USFL having a bi-lateral option clause on all their players under contract. However, this new amendment has been put in place to close the loophole of the USFL’s best players being freed from their contracts and being free potentially to choose another league not named the NFL. <<

So the original USFL contract was: IF the player goes to an NFL team BUT does not make the FINAL CUT, they can choose to go to any other league... But they have to get signed to an NFL team FIRST then CUT.
The USFL changed the contract mid season for new hires, so that if they get cut from an NFL team their USFL contract is then REactivated and they can not sign with an other league.

If there was a bi lateral option under initial contracts and players or agents didn’t agree to it. Then they are free when the USFL contract expires.

The NFL stuff shouldn’t matter. Only for the amended contracts signed by players later in the process.

So we should expect Kyle Sloter back with the Breakers and Luis Perez back with the Generals.
