XFL NAMES VP COMMUNICATIONS

I realize this was reported yesterday. It was on this board’s main page but I was a little surprised nobody posted it for discussion. There was some comments about the XFL not practicing in their team’s home markets and how it was important that the teams were a part of the community.

I listened to Mike Mitchell on the Markcast too and they brought up the importance that the XFL was going to need to be a part of the communities, with events, meet and greets, etc. I think this hire is a good example of the league understanding how important it is to engage the national/local media. I do believe the XFL is doing a great job with the people they are putting in place. They are filling positions with people that have a lot of experience.

It’s important the players are recognized and teams are connected to national and especially local media to build the brand. This doesn’t appear lost on the XFL.

In different stories with local media, Hines Ward and Anthony Becht have mentioned how important that relationship with the local community is.

Here's the Ward story: https://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/art ... 333089.php

And Becht: https://www.stltoday.com/sports/other/f ... 7497b.html

Clearly, the local media in these markets have latched on to the fact that teams won't be necessarily "based" in those cities and are rightfully asking coaches about it. Coaches aren't dodging the questions so that too gives me some hope there's a game plan here from the league on how to reach out to these fans.

What's worrisome isn't the markets where the media are asking those questions, it's the ones where they aren't. The media will be engaged in San Antonio and St. Louis because the fans have bought in. Everywhere else (save Arlington), the XFL is working with one hand tied behind their backs.

To be fair, Vegas has given the XFL a decent amount of ink, even if it's with the typical smug, dismissive tone the town conveys to second tier sports. The DC papers have written a fair bit as well and are generally more positive, though most articles seem to be written as a jab towards the Commanders as opposed to being solely pro-XFL. The news out of Seattle, Houston and Orlando has been pretty barren by and large

I believe XFL 2.0 spent fair amount of resources (time, people, money) promoting the teams in local markets to local youth and at community events. That's not cheap. Will they being doing so this go round, not sure.

The team presidents played a big role in the community involvement in 2.0. The structure is different in 3.0, for the first year at least, so it’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out. 2.0 had an exceptional social media team that reached and hit home with the younger fans. Many were scooped up and are still employed. To try and duplicate their social media presence from before should be a priority as well.

I think teams can make up not practising in the markets. For example, send an away team early for a media event prior to a home game. It’s not ideal. But better than playing all games in a hub away from home fans.

Also, they could do an event via Zoom. Something people are really familiar with now.

The more I see the more XFL's cost Foot print will greatly exceed USFL's. Interesting.

As well as the XFL’s popularity could greatly exceed the USFL’s. For year 1 they did a respectable job but they better bring more than a second hub to the table for year 2 if they want to keep people excited, IMO.
