XFL Orlando - Disney Connection?

Post by MarkNelson »

Since it was leaked Terrell Buckley was expected to be hired as head coach of the Orlando XFL team, do you think there will be a connection between that franchise and the local Disney World? Maybe in a team name, like when they named the Anaheim NHL franchise “The Mighty Ducks?”

Ugh, I hope not. Anaheim is a perfect example of why not as they ended up changing the team name when Disney sold the team. If you're the XFL, it's nice to think you'll be with ESPN/Disney forever, but if you're not, it would probably necessitate a re-brand.

More coincidence than connection, I think. Remember, the move to Orlando was already in the works even in the McMahon era.

Truth is, in 2020 they did not plan to move out of Tampa. In speaking to a former XFL executive they were disappointed in Tampa Bay. However, on March 20, 2020, just days after the pandemic was made official, Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At the time, XFL officials felt the Tampa Bay Vipers would be able to capitalize on the local market’s expected interest in the game of football.

When I was told this, I kind of rolled my eyes. But this was seen as the plan before the league went kaboom.
