REP: Apple to spend millions on live sports content

Post by 4th&long »

This is huge... Apple waking up to fact that the one irreplaceable thing to watch is LIVE SPORTS.

And this will flood the sports leagues with mo' $$$$.

>> Apple is on an "aggressive hunt" for potential deals that would allow it to broadcast live sports content on its TV+ streaming service as part of a wider effort to boost subscription numbers, according to a new report from investment firm Wedbush. <<

This helps - XFL, USFL and even indoor FB and the big sports leagues too of course.

It’sa good sign for spring ball but the last thing I want is an exclusive deal when it comes to The xfl and USFL. Like I don’t want it to be like the cfls espn + deal, for it to work it’s gotta be easy to find

The USFL is owned by FOX and even that isn't exclusive - as Arrogant Rodgers says - RE-LAX

Its all good, just adds more time to fill with Deep pockets to boot

They could end up bidding for the NBA and MLB since they have not had any new TV deals as of late, while the NFL and NHL have.

The article mentions MLB push, so yep on that. NBA is interesting. Does ESPN lose some of the NBA to Apple? The NBA needs IMO ESPN to pump up the sport so I don't see them losing that 100%. BUT Apple has a massive amount of money in cash and it's market cap is $3T abouts - if they want to massively over pay, they can.

That can help NBA near-term but being behind a pay wall could hurt them mid-longer term.

BUT that could open up ESPN (or TNT/TBS) to an XFL/USFL deal when NBA deal end in 2025.

I've been saying for years that all these cable sports channels need programming. And that's actually becoming more the case for non-sports specific cable channels - and now STREAMING finally admits they need it. And streaming is a HUGH multiplier in that all major broadcasters (sans Fox) have a dedicated streaming service, plus streaming king NF and then the tech heavyweights Amazon and Apple.
- Its just a WHOLE LOT of (live) programming to fill. I hope it all helps spring FB. The $$$ are there.

Related to the topic, Front Office Sports had a story today on Netflix dipping its toe further into sports with a new tennis series:

https://frontofficesports.com/netflix-t ... is-series/

There is suspicion that Netflix will continue to add sports properties and eventually perhaps even live games. For the XFL, Netflix seems like it would be in play for some of the league's desired shoulder programming, even if they don't actually air the games.

Not surprised at all GP. NF ceo keeps saying no but he'll fold on that as the other heavy weights get into sports.

The move to streaming is not a longterm guaranteed win for anyone. Its competing with Cable/Broadcast for programming and as we all know the crap on TV today is well crap. Cable watered it down when there was the channel explosion and now Streaming is further exploding it. Add to that streaming is mostly available all at once - Disney still using the hybrid release method on its TV series but will that work long term - I don't know. With the exception of Live sports which works on a strict schedule and is not desirable on-demand. I just don't see enough media talent out there to fulfill all that's required and sports is the logical answer. Amazon is going all in TNF next year and spending $500mm on a Lord of Rings series. That could be a lethal combo for attracting viewers.

Right now streaming has a much higher stock price multiple per revenue $ than legacy TV. That gap will close over time, especially growth slows and when they add advertising... and they will. But in the near term - its $$$ for the taking.

IMO its good news for Alt FB period.

Netflix doing live sports would be weird.

I honestly think they’d do a great job though.

Not saying they wouldn't, it would just be weird.
