CFL Week 1

Post by Tank55 »

I will definitely lose interest once we get to CFB Week 0, but in the meantime, I am excited to check out the long awaited return of the CFL. Here are the games; I assume/hope they will all be on ESPN+/ESPN3 in the US:

Thu 8:30 ET TiCats @ Bombers
Fri 9:30 ET Lions @ Riders
Sat 7:00 ET Argos @ Stamps
Sat 10:00 ET Redblacks @ Elks

I looked for the betting lines and came up empty; if anyone has them, please share.

ESPN schedule:

https://espnpressroom.com/us/press-rele ... -schedule/

Argos/Als (1980) was the first live football game in ESPN history, before NCAA, USFL, Arena League, and NFL. Didn't think about that one.

Wonder if there would ever be anything in the works in future years to put a Sunday game on ABC, I'd imagine the NFL probably wouldn't be too thrilled about it, but it'd be a one-time deal or a special occasion, kinda like when ESPN did the whole Johnny Manziel/Baker Mayfield thing on Countdown (they had his game following, while Mayfield's first start just happened to be later that day in Oakland).

Must have been a frustrating night to be a Lions fan. First was the quarterback weirdness, with Reilly being announced as the starter, not starting, coming into the game at halftime, and then not finishing. Second was the kicking -- Lions lost by 4, and the kicker missed at least one mid range field goal and extra point. Is he the team's global player?

He's one of them, yes. Their other one is their punter.

From what I read, Reilly's treatment didn't didn't kick in until after the game started. But it looks like he wouldn't have finished the game regardless.

Thank goodness for that start. As a Roughriders fan, that was an awful finish.

So far 2/3 games have been good and the quality of play (and officiating) is above my expectations.

TV ratings. Multiply by 9 to get a rough comparison to an American audience.

Thursday
Hamilton at Winnipeg: 683,100

Friday
B.C. at Saskatchewan: 764,600

Saturday
Toronto at Calgary: 318,400
Ottawa at Edmonton: 341,700

Total Week 1 average: 526,950

Pretty much TSL FS1 type ratings for the CFL on ESPN 2. 61k for the Thursday Grey Cup rematch and 174k for the Elks and Redblacks. Being that ESPN pays pretty much nothing to show the games I'm sure they're content.

Cornelius hasn't played particularly great but he is the Elks starting quarterback now. Previously it was due to injury but now it's because if performance.
