These talks were not universally liked across the CFL... What a very telling official statement by a team.

I don't know, the reaction on Edmonton's page seemed to be mostly 'What a stupid statement'. This would be called an own goal. Did they like being effectively nationalized as well? Or was it how close they came to a second straight year off (which would have flattened the league for the last time)?

On the CFL twitter the reaction is more protective fanboy........until somebody pointed out to them that they're doing everything but supporting the league where they need it, and if it keeps up they'll be right back here again in 2-3 years (own goal #2)

In a few years Edmonton will be playing same 4 teams over and over, let's see how they feel then. In a decade they're dropped from averaging 40k a game to just 28k. Maybe the XFL wasn't their savior, but the CFLs problems will only get worse not better

Looks like not all CFL teams are in the same boat. Some of the comments on this page towards the CFL are brutal. How long will MLSE continue to bleed money on the Argos.

And of course there's the own goal #3 of "Hey Edmonton were you as proud of your former name?"

They really should have sat this one out, Abe strikes again

Toronto's MSLE owners aren't interested in the CFL they are looking to make money. In the End they'd rather be in the NFL.

The XFL was a one way ticket and crap shoot, with unknown upside potential and really only interested in the big 3 markets of Canada.

And the XFL was NOT bringing $$$ or they wanted $$$. Good luck with that.

More rumors about Toronto bailing from PFT. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2 ... /#comments

Seems like MLSE smells what the Rock is cooking

A full merger was always going to be difficult simply because CFL teams are privately-owned, while the XFL owns all of its teams. It's two completely different ownership structures. I'm not sure how that would work with Toronto potentially bolting for the XFL, unless the new XFL owners sell off the franchises, too. But that wouldn't be easy all the while trying to also completely start the league up again. Maybe MLSE partners with Garcia/Johnson/RedBird in owning the XFL in exchange for "giving up" the Argos to the league.
