CFL: No formal arrangement with XFL at this time

Post by GregParks »

The CFL put out a statement on the talks with the XFL today. Here's the link: https://www.cfl.ca/2021/07/07/statement ... rding-xfl/

And the full text:

“Our talks with the XFL, exploring the potential for collaboration and innovation, have been positive and constructive.

While we remain open to finding new ways to work together in the future, we and our XFL counterparts have jointly decided to not pursue any formal arrangements at this time.

We at the CFL are now squarely focused on preparing for August 5th and the start of our 2021 regular season, which will culminate December 12 with the playing of the 108th Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ontario.

We are looking forward to this year and a bright future for our league.”

The only way I'm bothering with this league is if McMahon buys it back. These clowns are clueless.

Agreed, I've also said they should have sold to VM or brought him in after the 10/1/2020 announcement. Clearly VM had sellers remorse and tried to buy it back but a bunch of creditors that got more than most in a bankruptcy griped. And now XFL is at best 3 years removed from the last game they played - that's not alot of goodwill to leverage after just 5 games played.

Should have played a hybrid bubble in 2021 4 teams in Houston 6 weeks/2 games a week. And then ramped back in 2022 - like I said. TSL/Fox jumped in THE NEXT DAY. Did a 2 season test ! And is now moving forward as USFL. IMO XFL should work with USFL.

And BTW NBC has already closed down NBCSN, and now looking at RSN's they own. So while the Rock has connections with NBC are they really big in Sports media? And VM is working with NBC too via sale to WWE of media rights, so It still would be better in his hands (Fox and NBC).

I don't know why people have such a hard on for Vince McMahon. He's a glorified Carney and looked down upon by traditional sports media. He could have done what most major corporations did, furlough all but a few front office staff while keeping a skeleton social media team to keep the league relevant during the long off-season. Instead, in typical Vince McMahon fashion he looks for the shyster way out. He could have kept the league "running" for as little as $5 million if he wanted to, or about as much as the typical WWE holiday party costs to host.

Funny, the only ones that really matter (you know that move product) he built a fine business relationship with. 15 years after ESPN laughed him out of the room with XFL1.0 they're covering Wrestlemania at JerryWorld, must have done something right.

You're talking about the "traditional sports media" that have given way to the lowest common denominator like Deadstink and useless has-been and never-was commentators like Skip Brainless and Mike Florio that are essentially a modern day version of Howard Cosell fading away at the New York Daily News 35 years ago. So not that I've asked him, but I think Vince can live with it.

Well I'm glad you're on the case to tell him what to do with his money. Of course there's the question of how many startups/restarts made a go of it in 2020 and how they kept afloat during the scamdemic.

Not just that, he had a strict timeline as to when the league went from we're back to go time. When that was knocked off, that was it. That two just became six overnight, so I don't know how many 75 year olds who have five and six-year plans, but I'm sure you have the answers right?

Ultimately he has put his money where his mouth is and accomplished 1.5 yrs of FB that's more than many others that talk alot, but do little. He got scared in 2020, and with his stock in tank, bailed. No Covid or even no fear porn, XFL 2.0 lives. Its a shame.

A couple of stray thoughts on the matter...

-As someone unfamiliar with the CFL and those who cover it, I was not impressed with the Canadian sports coverage of this story. Granted, it's tough when nothing leaks, but I think those who cover the CFL speculated (or "reported") just about every conceivable way these conversations could've ended up, including talking about a possible merger and scare-mongering about what on-field rules Canadians would be forced to adopt. And as it turns out, per Mike Mitchell (I think), discussions never even got that far. Part of me wonders how much the feedback the CFL may have received from fans (which, from my limited perspective, was mostly negative) played a part in nothing coming of this.

-Though it was reported that it would have no bearing on the CFL's negotiations with the XFL, you have to wonder how much the sports betting law that passed and other recent events that have reflected positively on a 2021 CFL season affected those negotiations. The CFL was in a very different place when these negotiations started compared to where they are now. The future was pretty murky for them then, but it looks a lot brighter today.

-Ultimately, this feels like a big whiff by the XFL. They put a lot of eggs in this basket, pushing out a potential 2022 season into 2023, now with nothing to show for it. 2022 is a wasted year because of this. And would whatever was gained by some kind of partnership really have been worth kicking the can down the road yet again?
