>> NBC has pulled out of bidding for television broadcast rights of NHL games, likely leaving the media rights package to be picked up by Turner Sports. TSN reports that TNT will likely serve as the secondary broadcast partner in the United States. <<

>> In an upset, Turner Sports is picking up the remaining portion of the NHL’s media rights.
Sports Business Journal and the New York Post reported Monday that Turner has acquired the NHL “B” package starting next season, including three Stanley Cup finals, half of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and a regular season schedule that includes the annual Winter Classic. Numerous outlets and reporters said as much Monday, but only SBJ and the Post were characterizing the deal as done, rather than close.
Both outlets are both reporting that Turner will pay $225 million/year for the rights. Variety is reporting a rights fee “around $200 million.”

As recently as the weekend, Fox was said to be the frontrunner for the “B” package. As recently as the weekend, Fox was said to be the frontrunner for the “B” package. <<
As I opined in other thread on rights fees - NHL USA rights in Excess of $600 million a year.
Fox will be looking for Programming - B Woods (TSL) better get this right, window opening.

NBC being out is not surprising. After the XFL whalloped them in the ratings, you had to think they were looking elsewhere.
Turner is a little bit more of a surprise, given they already have the NBA, don't have a dedicated sports outlet, and have zero broadcast presence (unless they're planning putting games on The CW). But then again, the NBA is pretty much all they have, except for March Madness, which is only a couple of weeks. NASCAR has been gone for years, and they've never had regular season college basketball. Plus, it was likely either Turner or Fox, since CBS didn't want it with its college hoops slate packed to the brim and CBS Sports Network largely being pay-to-play.

What it does is give the NBA and NHL now the exact same broadcast partners, so wonder what that'll look like.
In 2003-04 it was packed with ABC having a fuller college basketball slate, although having moved to Saturday nights back in 2016 with the NBA they'll probably give their remaining Sundays to the NHL.
Two cable partners to split that side could give ESPN Wednesday and TNT Friday

Cable channels need live sports content to justify their carriage fees to the cable companies, is one major driver for Warner. Also if AT&T wants to spin off/sell TNT/TBS it will have more value this way.MGB01 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 9:46 pm What it does is give the NBA and NHL now the exact same broadcast partners, so wonder what that'll look like.
