XFL Washington Head Coaching Candidates

Post by MikeMitchell »

Here is a list of potential head coaches for The XFL's Washington Franchise; (*Black Monday Updated Coaching List 1/13*)

Russ Grimm- The hall of fame offensive lineman of the infamous "Hogs" in Washington, had been coaching offensive lines in The NFL from 1992 to 2017, when he retired from coaching at the age of 59 as Titans OL coach. Over the course of his coaching career, he was interviewed several times for head coaching positions but never got the chance to lead his own franchise. Only rising to the position of assistant head coach. Twice Grimm came close. Once in Chicago and more infamously when Bill Cowher resigned as The Steelers head coach. Publicly it was revealed that Grimm stated that he would be chosen to succeed Cowher by Steelers management, only to see Mike Tomlin get the job instead. Grimm ended up leaving Pittsburgh and heading to Arizona. I think it's worth a shot to give him a call and to see if he is interested in being a head coach in the place where he made his legendary career.

Bill Callahan- Redskins Offensive Line Coach/Assistant Head Coach -One of the game's most respected and best offensive line coaches. After leading The Raiders to a superbowl. Callahan has not been able to get another opportunity to be a pro football head coach. He did coach for 4 years at Nebraska before returning to the NFL.

Dell McGee- Georgia Assistant Head Coach/RB's Coach- Only 45 years old, McGee was voted the #1 Recruiter in the nation by Rivals.com last year. Two of his pupils are current NFL star RB's Sony Michel and Nick Chubb. The former XFL player for the Xtreme is a rising star in the coaching ranks. The ability to connect with today's generation of players and the ability to find talent is ideal for a coach who acts as the team GM in the XFL.

Mike Smith- Former Falcons Head Coach His star has fallen in recent years. He’s 20 games over 500 as an NFL head coach. (66-46), actually won Sporting News NFL coach of the year on 3 separate occasions. Since being fired by Atlanta in 2014. Smith has struggled as a defensive coordinator, most recently being fired by The Bucs. Smith started building his nfl coaching rep in nearby Maryland with The Ravens before elevating his coaching career.

Mike Kelly-Widener Head Coach- This one is out of left field but makes sense. Most people don't know who this is. Mike Kelly has been coaching in The MAC since 2014. He's won a championship at that level amassing a 50-35 record. He's also been a head coach in The CFL with Winnipeg. He had been an offensive coordinator for 4 years in Canada. Kelly was the offensive coordinator for The Orlando Rage back in 2001. He has also spent time as a talent evaluator. 4 years in The NFL as an advanced scout and pro personnel guy with The Eagles and Redskins. This last area helps when XFL head coaches are expected to also be their team's GM's. Not a sexy choice but a good one.

Dom Capers- Former NFL Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator - Longtime football coach since the 70’s. Coached in The USFL, coached two expansion teams in Carolina and Houston, so he has experience with startup teams. He had more success as a coordinator than as a head coach, winning a superbowl with Green Bay. Capers is 68 and doesn’t need the money but he’s never had full control of a team. Not the sexiest choice but he has the reputation to give a league credibility.
