PFT: XFL, CFL champions could meet

Post by 4th&long »

PFT among others picking this up.

First American news on XFL in a long while....

Via Michael McCarthy of FrontOfficeSports.com, the XFL and CFL champions could meet in an interleague championship game.

It’s a simple proposition. The two leagues would play their seasons, possibly with interleague games between the XFL and the CFL, with an interleague championship game capping the action. <<

This is the link to the article to which PFT is referring:

I'd be much more amenable to the leagues staying separate only to play in a championship game and/or all-star game against each other rather than a full-fledged merger. But if the CFL financial issues are as deep-rooted as some are speculating/reporting, this proposition doesn't solve those problems.

While most of what we're seeing on the Canadian side of things is more speculating than any sourced reporting, there does seem to be more momentum building for an actual merger rather than what Mike McCarthy mentions in this article. That in and of itself is kind of interesting. Then again, it could just mean that everything is still on the table in terms of how this could shake out.

One thing about this reporting is that its getting around, Yahoo, and other more mainstream media is picking it up. So it looks like this could have been a leak to create some buzz. Notice its not offensive to CFL fans as it has no mention of rules. And it comes on the heels of PFT picking up TSL news and CFL reports of a postponed season. So both XFL and CFL gain positive news with this report.

With all the talk of MSLE pushing this from the CFL side - it tells me there isn't 100% agreement among the CFL teams and who knows what the XFL is up to. Because regardless of what they do, there is not reason to completely shutdown the XFL vs prepping to play other than there's something the XFL needs from the CFL. Which again we don't know as that's not being even speculated in the news.

Also apparently 6/9 canadian teams wanted to play LAST year and its MSLE that's the biggest hold up then and now.

I tend to agree with this. Sadly, it seems like in order to survive, the XFL needs SOME kind of relationship with the CFL. But like you said, we don't know to what extent.

So when would these teams play each other in a championship game? Also would both leagues be stupid enough to schedule a championship game in the fall against an NCAA or NFL game day?
