More news that MLSE (CFL-Toronto) is Driving talks

Post by 4th&long »

https://xflnewshub.com/xfl-news/reports ... p-the-cfl/

>> Arash Madani of Sportsnet, is reporting that the CFL will officially announce a delay to the 2021 season on April 19th. Most people within the CFL world knew this was coming but now we have a potential date of an announcement.
~
Sports radio host Rod Pederson also reported over the weekend a potential reason why the CFL season will be delayed and why the XFL and CFL are even talking in the first place.

This is what he wrote about the situation on his website.

“I’ve spoken with five solid sources whose stories on the CFL/XFL merger and 2021 season are all generally the same. One of their messages began with “You deserve to know truth'”

He goes on the say his sources are telling him that MLSE, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the owners of the Toronto Argonauts want to delay/cancel the season and are the driving force behind talks with the XFL.

It should be noted that MLSE also owns the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL and, Toronto Raptors of the NBA. Also, Rogers Communications, who owns Sportsnet is also a 37% owner of MLSE. These are all important facts to know.

“MLSE realized it’s impossible to turn a profit with the Argonauts (roughly two years ago), they immediately turned their attention to blowing up the CFL and making it a profit-making venture.”

He goes on to say that the COVID situation is potentially being used as a cover to try and scrap the CFL season and start over with the XFL.
<<

This will go over like a lead balloon with CFL fans...

If MLSE is pushing this they will push 4down as well. That's good for XFL fans but will CFLL fans go on for the ride or force a fire sale by MLSE?

Again - what / why is the XFL having these talks and what do they need vs what do they want? And will they invest money in an all new CFL?

This is just bizarre.

Looks to me like MLSE is the CFL's modern-day version of Bruce McNall, the shyster who pissed off Wayne Gretzky (which Dustin Johnson couldn't do at his worst), John Candy (which was never done), a whole bunch of his own football guys (Mike McCarthy: There goes my ******* quarterback!) and then deservedly wound up behind bars.

If MLSE's end game is to be in the NFL, I'd be extremely cautious if I were RBC. As with the AFL and USFL (and briefly the WFL) this isn't the road to be going down.

Sheesh, at least put Russell, who played in TO (Bills) his rookie year, up there if you're gonna do that.

Of course this is totally not telegraphing future intentions or anything............😉

MLSE has zero pull in the CFL. another b.s theory from arash. MLSE hasn't been properly run ever and even more so the teams they operate have fallen apart since the teachers pension sold off stake in these properties and the Labatt/Carling beer companies gave up interest in these larger proprietors

Context for those unfamiliar with what MLSE is:

MLSE is a coalition between three partners: Larry Tanenbaum (25%), Bell Canada (37½%) and Rogers Media (37½%). Bell and Rogers are essentially the two major sports media companies in English-speaking Canada (Bell shares ownership of TSN with ESPN, and Rogers owns Sportsnet). They're bitter rivals, so they seldom agree, and Tanenbaum essentially uses their money to inflate his effective wealth.

This is also the second time that TSN's parent company has bailed out the Argonauts: after the Bruce McNall fiasco of the 1990s, TSN's owner Labatt bought the team and held it for about five years.

The Argonauts still exist for the same reason we had the LA Wildcats and New York Guardians in the XFL this year: it's all for the TV revenue. Big markets are what the networks want, be it in the USA or in Canada.

EXACTLY - its why XFL beat AAF (other than a better liist of channels), and its why OL should have been able to get some TV money in Yr 2 (but inked before yr 1)
