3down: Former CFL commish Smith: ‘You have to play this year — people forget quickly (same applies to XFL)

Post by 4th&long »

Why the CFL needs to play in 2021 is why the XFL needed to play in 2021 (and 2022 is a drop dead absolute do or die)...

>> Smith was the eighth commissioner of the CFL, a post he held from 1992 to 1997. He knows how vital it is for the three-down league to find a way to return to play this year.

“The No. 1 objective is: there has to be a season in 2021. You cannot go two seasons in a row without some form of a season. The owners have to recognize that this social distancing will stay in place to a certain extent because of the variants,” Smith said on TSN 690 radio in Montreal.

“Whether it’s June training camp, whether it’s July training camp, whether it’s a short training camp in August, you start on Labour Day and you have a shortened season. You have to play this year because out of sight means out of mind, and then people forget you quickly, especially your sponsors.” <<

Former CFL commissioner Smith is absolutely RIGHT, and the same applies to the XFL - alot of money and resources were expended and pissed down the leg.

I agree for the most part, the difference is the league still has fans, sponsors, and even some slight money given them from TSN to make it through 2020. The XFL on the other hand left hundreds of sponsor and vendors without payment, such as that freelance camera girl that was owed over $1k dollars. Who knows how much bud light and Progressive will get back when all is said and done. Maybe 10% of what they were owed. The CFL literally owes it to their fans and sponsors as they're currently sitting on their money, the XFL on the other hand has to try and lure all these folks back from square one

I was speaking more of the Fans of the XFL. I see no news thats sponsors got burned for unplayed games. As far as vendors - thats what happens in babkruptcy, though D-R-Rk did assume $9mm in liabilities as part of the purchase. Also this happened due to Covid.
