Per Mike Mitchell....

https://xflnewshub.com/xfl-news/details ... um=twitter

"The sense that I’m getting from people in the know is that the XFL’s return is on hold until agreements are made on how the XFL and CFL will be moving forward and collaborating in the future. "

Differences in Approach while in discussions:

The CFL... Is moving forward not only in 2022 but currently with a 2021 season.

The XFL... Is not moving forward, in 2021 and even the promised 2022 season is now on Hold.

IMO - XFL did not get that LUCRATIVE TV deal they were hoping to get and are now open to other strategies no matter how strange. Strange days indeed...

The CFL needs to put on a strong face as they still have personnel to pay and sponsors to appease. The XFL has none of that right now. It's unknown if all 9 CFL owners are on board unless some fans are allowed in the stands. Apparently Ontario won't host any large gatherings til at least September so that's 2 CFL teams that would lose even more money than usual. The CFL has tried desperately to expand its reach beyond Canada but has made little inroads thus far. With the NFL giving the new European League of Football (ELF) rights to NFL Europe names and trademarks, the CFL really has nowhere to expand its game besides Mexico and the good ol US of A. The CFL is essentially 5 feet into a 6 foot grave, Covid sped up the process, but the league was dying a slow death long before that.

CFL season is not “on hold” pending a conversation.

Big difference.

The CFL has survived a world war, and has literally out-lasted dozens of other football leagues including two XFLs. Ambrosie seems to want to buddy-up with The Rock, but nobody knows how this relationship will make his league better.

Today was full of hyperbole and lip service. None of it will take the XFL back to the field. The XFL needs money or a fat broadcasting contract. Neither will come from a CFL merger.

Lots of things lasted 100 years and are now gone or close to it. Remember when blockbuster had over 3500 stores. The CFL isn't what it was 50 years ago, not even what it was 10 years ago when it averaged 800k viewers a game compared to the 500k now. Owners are bleeding money, Montreal and Toronto were run by the league until they were practically given away for free. The TSN contract is relatively paltry and their social media presence is absent.

Young Canadians love 4 down football and there's something special about seeing Toronto vs. New York as opposed to facing off against Hamilton or saskatchewan. More teams and the history of the CFL with the marketing power of the Rock and finances of Redbird make a merged League more attractive to sponsors and networks. Minor league 4 down football has a higher glass ceiling than "Major league" 3 down football, especially in Canada.

Lol, comparing the CFL to Blockbuster Video. You are reaching for something and grabbing air.

The CFL does apparently have a larger group of for-display-only geniuses than the NFL did (to his credit, Roger Goodell slammed them shut) that thinks another season shutdown is a good idea. Sure, might be disadvantageous financially to play, but no 2021, no return ever, not where the CFL's at.

So since the CFL and XFL are for all intents and purposes in the same boat, what's the problem with talking?

I mean, the PR line is different, but there's a lot of skepticism around whether their season is going to happen. Do you think they're definitely playing their published schedule in 2021?
