XFL New York Head Coaching Candidates

Post by MikeMitchell »

*BLACK MONDAY UPDATE* Updated 1/13

The XFL is going to be hiring head coaches in the next month or so. In big football cities like New York. It's going to be very important who the head coach ends up being. You want someone who will give the team instant credibility. The XFL is going to be fighting an uphill battle in this department. They can't afford to get the head coaching hire wrong. The last go round for The XFL in New York produced Drew Pearson as the Hitmen's GM and Rusty Tillman as it's head coach. Pearson who has always been a great talker(See his NFL draft intro from 2 years ago), He ended up making a good impression in his role. The same can not be said for Rusty Tillman. The veteran special teams coach lifer was in over his head, making questionable personnel and in game decisions while leading The Hitmen to a 4 and 6 record. The XFL has to get this coaching decision correct this time around. Despite the cache attached to him, I have eliminated Rex Ryan from this list. He was tailor made for the original XFL back in 2001. New York has much more favorable opinion of him than most would believe. He did get to two AFC Championship games and did defeat The Pats and Peyton Manning on the road in doing so. He just would command too much money and The XFL doesn't suit his stature.

Here's a list of candidates who I think would fit the New York market.

Mike Tice- Former Head Coach- The former Vikings head coach has over 3 decades of being a coach and player under his belt. Played as a TE, coached offensive lineman and coordinated offenses. Born and raised in New York, Tice quit the coaching profession in February, due to frustration with today's pro football player mentality. He's actually back coaching The NFLPA collegiate bowl this coming January. A bowl game that is being run and coordinated by XFL VP Doug Whaley.

Charlie Weiss- Notre Dame/Kansas Head Coach - New Jersey native. Hasn’t coached in 4 years. Once regarded as one of The best offensive minds in all of football during his run as Patriots offensive coordinator.

Eric Mangini- Former Jets/Browns Head Coach- Once dubbed Man Genius after defeating The Patriots and his former mentor Bill Belichick. Mangini was seen as a boy whiz in football circles. His star fell quickly. He had some great drafts with The Jets but was let go after a 9 and 7 season. He went on to The Browns and couldn't reverse the curse there. He has had a few stops as an assistant in the NFL but has since gone on to do some sports analyst work on ESPN and Fox. Mangini is a smart football coach who never seemed to connect well with players. He does have a good personnel track record and would fit the HC/GM role that The XFL is looking for.

Steve Spagnuolo- Former Defensive Coordinator/NFL Head Coach- In most circles, Spagnuolo is not seen as a good NFL head coach. Winning only 11 out of 52 games but he is highly regarded in the New York/New Jersey region because of his superbowl championship run by defeating The then undefeated New England Patriots.
