CFL 2021(?) All aboot our friends up north

Argonauts change primary logo

Image
The Toronto Argonauts announced today they will be bringing back the famous boat logo, but with a modern twist, as their new primary logo. The current shield logo will still be used selectively as a secondary mark moving forward.

Well, I hope their back, and the rest of the teams, too. I can't tell you how disappointed I have been to be missing CFL playoff football right now.

Commish: We'll set a schedule soon to "allow us to feel" like we're playing in 2021
Chris O’Leary: Through this year you’ve mentioned the unknown with the pandemic and how quickly things can change with it. How does that play into planning for 2021? I imagine there are many different possibilities of bubbles and fans in stadiums and the normal that we’re used to and probably everything in between that. How do you see 2021 looking right now?

Randy Ambrosie: Well, I think we’re going to play football. At its core, that’s what I think. I think we’re going to play football. I think we’re going to find a way to play. I think we’re going to find a way to get fans back in our stadiums enjoying the game they love. I think we’re going to get our broadcast partner back televising games.

It’s too early to know exactly how it’s going to play out but we’re building a schedule and we’ll have a schedule shortly after we launch Grey Cup Unite this week. Why? Because we think we think we’re going to play and we want to play and we’re confident that we’ll find a way back onto the field.

CO: How important do you think it is for fans to see a schedule, giving them something tangible to think about for the future? In terms of generating hope and optimism I’d think that would go a long way.

RA: The goal is to allow all of us to feel that way. The goal is to have this week, Grey Cup Unite and get a schedule out because we know that sports fans and football fans and CFL fans want to see us play. So we’re going to do everything that we normally do. We’re going to act and behave like a league that is bound and determined to play because there are players counting on us, there are sponsors and partners counting on us and we have a responsibility to all of them.

That’s the way we’re going to approach it, is just eyes wide open but with our foot on the gas. We’re going to come back and resume this path we’ve been on to make our league bigger and stronger and recognize that we’ve got a great place in the world of football.

CFL needs to play in 2021 or I’m sure it’s over for the league. It’s probably good they did not play this year, because Covid is raging across Canada now, and in all CFL cities. 😞

Get that vaccine out. Roll it out and the virus will wane. Then CFL training camps can begin next May-June as normal.

Teams need revenue. Players, coaches and staff need jobs.

The Montreal Gazette just said the same thing. I haven't been paying super close attention, but I guess I'm sort of surprised it's that dire? I could see the Alouettes or the Argonauts going under, but these teams with dedicated stadiums? I can't really wrap my head around that.

Keep in mind, though, that big cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are what give the CFL the veneer of being more than just another AAF or UFL, lumbering around in small cities playing second-tier football until their financiers run out of money. You lose teams like them, and you basically have a minor league with a cult following... and minor league football isn't exactly profitable. Nor do networks particularly care to pay for small-market football; even in Canada, perhaps especially so, they're going to want those big cities.

BC's owner just died. MLSE (the Argos owners) has made it clear they'd rather have an NFL team (they backed Bon Jovi's bid on the Bills). Montreal's fan support is fading fast, and it's not the first time the fickle Quebecois have walked away from their own teams.

That leaves Ottawa (doing surprisingly well), Hamilton (hanging in there), Winnipeg (whose ownership structure shouldn't even be legal), Saskatchewan (class of the league in terms of fan support but a tiny market), Calgary and Edmonton. The Atlantic bid is once again flailing in the winds. Now, you still would have the Southern Ontario market with Hamilton, but their rivals would be gone. I'm not sure you can sustain a league with that kind of lineup.

Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton all have the same ownership structure as the Green Bay Packers.

Yeah that smug MFer Trudeau can s##k it. CFL needs to hang in there and gov fear porn needs to end. Two vaccines out in record time thanks to USA admin and this fear porn needs to go away.

Bottomline the virus is 95% of fatalities over 50yo, 80% over 65. Focus on that group and the rest can tough it out (like a bad flu season which isnt perfect) or wont notice they have it.

That covers most of the CFL's fan base, and the CFL isn't viable without all of its gate revenue.

I would not be surprised if there are a lot of people who will refuse to take a vaccine because reasons.
