Spring 2021 FCS: Scouting for the next Donald Parham

Post by Tank55 »

Making a thread to keep an eye on the Spring 2021 FCS season. Between the AAF, XFL, and FCS, this will be three straight years with meaningful football in the spring. Pretty crazy.

FCS Playoff field trimmed to 16; MEAC to participate
For the Spring 2021 season, the FCS Playoff field has been reduced from 24 to 16 teams. There will be 11 automatic qualifiers, which will consist of the champions of every conference with the exception of the Ivy League and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), which hasn’t participated in the FCS Playoffs since 2014, will send its champion to the playoff this Spring.

The remaining five participants in the FCS Playoffs this Spring will each be at-large teams selected by the FCS Playoff Selection Committee. The committee consists of one athletic director from each conference with an automatic bid.

Selections for the FCS Playoff will be made on Sunday, April 18, 2021. First Round playoff action will begin on Saturday, April 24, followed by the Quarterfinals on Saturday, May 1 and the Semifinals on Saturday, May 8.

The NCAA Division I Football Championship will be played on Saturday, May 15 or Sunday, May 16, 2021 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

SoCon to kick off February 20
The league has declared that it will open its Feb. 20, 2021 with a four-game slate.

Chattanooga will host Virginia Military Institute, East Tennessee State University will host Samford, Furman will host Western Carolina and Wofford will get Mercer in the opening slate of contests.

Since The Citadel elected to have a four-game fall schedule, the Bulldogs were not granted a waiver for a 12-game season, per sources with direct knowledge.

They are not scheduled to play longstanding rival Furman on the SoCon’s official schedule, and the Paladins are forfeit-winners of the contest after a random drawing among SoCon teams.

If the Citadel has to forfeit a game, why would you let it be against in-state rival Furman? Weird decision.

Towson opts out of the CAA's spring season
When — or if — the Colonial Athletic Association kicks off the spring 2021 football season, it will proceed without Towson.

The university announced Monday that it would sit out the six-game campaign, marking the first time in history that the program will not play football. The school, which has participated in football every year since 1969, listed the risk of long-term injuries as a reason for opting out.

This is the year FCS prospects are getting screwed bigtime. Hell, Trey Lance, as everyone expected, playing NDSU's game back on 10/3 and then bouncing pretty much shows that.

Most FCS prospects come from playoff teams, so why on earth would one play in the playoffs with the chance of playing the same weekend as the draft? Granted you had K-Rob, different situation--and we're talking about one guy.

The Big Sky hasn't even announced yet, but all indications are some teams will play two games in January, then the rest where the current spring football window is now. What's the point?

The Supplemental Draft might be worth exploring in the case of such prospects.

Bethune-Cookman (MEAC) opts out of all sports
Bethune-Cookman, a historically Black college in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, will not play sports during the 2020-21 school year, a move that impacts men's and women's basketball and football, a source confirmed to ESPN.

HBCU Gameday first reported the news.

"B-CU will forgo all spring athletic competition, including football and men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and track and field," Dr. E. LaBrent Chrite, the school's president, said in a letter published by HBCU Gameday. "The recent spike in COVID-19 positivity rates in the state, across Volusia County [Florida] and on our campus provides clear and unambiguous evidence, in our view, that now is simply not the time to resume athletic competition."

Just watched a game between Fresno State and Colorado State. The Rams have a Jr TE at 6’4”, 260 lbs, who looked like a man among boys. (The name caught my eye as well being a Wildcats fan) Trey McBride. Thought of Parham immediately.

Looks like the CAA will be kicking off its six-game schedule on March 6. I believe schools are still allowed to schedule two OOC games. The four teams in the south are playing home and homes and the seven teams in the north are playing each other once.

Full CAA schedule released

- The league is split into divisions, but there won't be a championship game for the conference's automatic bid to the playoffs. Best record takes it.
- Everyone has a bye week for flexibility in case of COVID postponements
- Two OOCs are allowed, beginning as early as January 23.

One place I wouldn't want to be outdoors in February: Harrisonburg, VA.
