Brian Woods has usually had good relations with his talent. Most of the time, when he asks them to come back to TSL, they do (such as Zach Mettenberger earlier this year).

With a major TV contract in hand, 4 yrs history, film going to NFL teams, NFL teams scouting, and ZIP alternatives in 2020, its easier than ever for them to get players.

With XFL in what could be suspended forever mode, this may find a niche.

TSL team names

Post by 4th&long »

The six teams will have distinct names and logos, likely as a result of the FS1 contract.

This weekend players will be assigned to their specific teams. We now know what the six teams’ names and logos will be. The Generals and Hughes will be returning at TSL 2020. The Hughes is the same logo but a new name. <<

An eagle-eyed spotter would recognize one of those logos as the old Florida Blacktips of the FXFL. Curiously, that's the only FXFL carryover (they sold off the Brawlers, but the Bolts, Fort and Mammoths were still available).

Actually I don't think it is, I was expecting it but looks different.

I think the teams names are passable to good. The colors are distinct enough vs the TSL east vs TSL west stuff

TSL vs FXFL - the B Woods leagues

Since you mentioned the FXFL....

I liked the FXFL concept but it was poorly executed with the money they had (Mets owner) Jeff Wilpon $$, but not a whole lot. Yet they spread the team geographically raising travel costs and need for local operations instead of central that barely materialized.

They had teams in Brooklyn, Boston, Omaha and a no-home team called the Florida Blacktips. Had B Woods focused on the NYC metro/Hartford CT market ( all covered by SNY) he may have had better luck. They bought air time all over the place. In fact he did try to some extent in yr 2 before folding. If he could have gotten Philly/LV and CSN-Philly (now NBCSN-Philly) on board he'd have covered almost 10% of the national TV market. It was played in the Fall As in Fall eXperimental Football League.

CONS: NYC/NJ/CT are all high cost to operate, taxes, regs, insurance.

PROS: All locations would have been in the SNY-TV market reducing need for TV time spending outside NY. Central location of league offices to operate all teams. One practice location. NY Metro is NOT a big college FB market, playing there may have a niche but possible market.

I could see the spring league morph into a version of this league but in Texas area. With 2 of the top 10 TV markets in Dallas/Houston and 2 fast growing metro areas in Austin and San Antonio and even OKC. Like the above example all would be in busing distance. Texas is VERY cost effective, hence why the TSL is playing there now.
These 5 cities would make a fun Spring Dev league. 4/5 teams 6-8 games+championship. Yes it would not be the AAF or XFL, but it could work.

Are the players paying to participate?

Do we know what rules they're using?

TSL and its predecessor the FXFL use a rulebook somewhere between the NFL and XFL. The kickoff rules are very similar. But as far as I know they don't use the double-forward pass or yardage conversions except when testing them for the XFL.

No - I used to laugh at people saying the FXFL at $1000-1500 a game needed to pay more. I was like why, where else are they going to get real FB practice, game film, and stay in FB shape.

Woods is now proving that as over paid as the TSL is charging players! like a sports camp/clinic. As long as the players see value in it they will show. FS1 tv deal only made that easier.

They do need to pay everyone else. Ie trainers and coaches and they have some good ones. Maybe past their prime but good knowledge and its only 6 weeks or so. June Jones and Mike Sigletary while not head coaches are coaching the offense and D.
