Probably more a point of comparison than directly, shows you why Vince needed to sell the league and give it a fresh start elsewhere. As we said back in May, any league that is dependent on game day revenue at this point is dead in the water. The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, the P5s that are forging ahead (might as well throw in the UFC and WWE too); they can withstand it, not prosper but they'll live through it nonetheless.

One angle is that maybe Dwayne can look to new revenue streams that weren't too different than what the CFL was supposedly pursuing, but again those are secondary. The XFL won't be getting any TV rights deals (if they do he'll have shown he might have actually been underpaid with that 87 mil he made last year) so it's up in the air what happens. Neccessity.............

Not sure if it directly impacts the XFL. It does raise the stakes a bit, though. The CFL basically told ESPN/TSN that the money they were paying wasn't nearly enough for the CFL to survive even a shortened season without fans, and the CFL gets an estimated $40-50 million a year from them, depending on who you ask.

The XFL business model is remarkably similar to the CFL's. It relies on gate revenue first and foremost. The difference is that Johnson, Garcia and Cardinale are probably not going to be running to the federal government for a bailout the way the CFL tried to do. Unless some of these restrictions start loosening up, it's not going to be easy to hold a 2021 season—and it likely will still be very difficult with so many sports being pushed back as it is.

There is one interesting note that I read from the CFL cancellation, not directly tied to the XFL per se. The CFL has practically guaranteed a 2021 season, with full fans in attendance. That's a bold statement.

But it would take a major standoff with the government to pull that off—which is not something most Canadians are particularly fond of doing. After the CFL begged for a bailout and didn't get it, they might be more inclined to play a little hardball.

The XFL does not rely on gate rev, it relied on selffunding while giving away TV rights in anticipation of a huge TV deal in yr3 or 4. The CFL would never get that deal. Gate was XFL primary source of rev but not only, but it was not reliant on that. The goal is TV rev.

Canada has handled the Pandemic better than we have, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Which is interesting considering the Trudeau history with the league: Pierre chased John Bassett off with the Canadian Football Act, Justin might go down as the one that chased the CFL off.

What's really surprising is they apparently felt they weren't making much from CBC they left for TSN yet they need to go to Ottawa begging for cash. That's unheard of here in the states, or at least is until the NBA and MLB go total cable-exclusive.

If the CFL folds, one wonders if the NFL would consider the Big 3 Canadian cities?

I think a Toronto team would be inevitable for the NFL if the CFL doesn't survive.
