XFL's Future

Post by MarkNelson »

In my opinion, the future of the XFL lies in three areas:

1. How lengthy and damaging will the COVID-19 crisis be?
2. When will the world economy recover?
3. Will Vince McMahon want to try it again?

1. In sports? So much so that there could be mass relocations/contractions when the major sports leagues resume play. Outside of it? I don't know, but maybe The Great Depression II?
2. A full recovery may not happen until 2022 at the earliest
3. Probably not.

I don't know what to think about the first two, but if things bounce back and there's someone eager to pay for the broadcast rights, I could definitely see them firing up the engines again. But those are two huge ifs.

This is my position. And it's why I think the league hasn't made any official announcement yet. I think McMahon's position is "the league is dead.... but I reserve the right to bring it back if things change."

We're gonna be left blowing in the wind for awhile...

XFL files for Chapter 11. That seems.... not good.

Interestingly it lists coaches as some of the creditors.

Well, the bright side of this is that the league was making tens of millions of dollars in revenue, which means there was an enterprise there with the potential to make money. You compare that to the AAF, which only had revenues of about $12 million.

Note the last sentence, though: it is "to maximize return to investors." I.E., Vince wants as much of his money back as he can get.

The coaches were on two-year contracts. What's crazy is how much more Trestman was making than everyone other than Stoops.

I think the bankruptcy clearly shows what Vince thinks the answers to 1 and 2 will be.
