Once a team's season is done, teams have about a week to sign any of their practice squad players to "futures" contracts, tying them with the team through the offseason and into spring workouts (unless they are released by the team during that time).
Practice squad contracts expire about a week after the team's final game, whether at the end of the regular season or whenever they are eliminated from postseason play. After a week, any practice squad players not signed to futures contracts become free agents.
This past winter, I tracked how many practice squad players signed futures contracts and how many became free agents (and how many of THEM signed on with the XFL):

Wow Quite a few, and those futures contracts usually lead to no where. If XFL comes back strong I hope less players sign on with futures contracts.

RB Austin Walter of the Renegades (you may remember him as the OTHER guy to return a kickoff for a TD) signed with San Francisco's practice squad today after trying out yesterday.

CB Saivion Smith has been signed by Dallas off their practice squad to replace Chidobe Awuzie, who went on IR.

WR De'Mornay Pierson-El was signed to the Raiders' practice squad. He played for St. Louis.
