If an NFL team(s) wants Walker, why would he want to stay in the XFL?1. Keep P.J. Walker at all costs

Depends on their personality.MidwestJimmy wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:45 amIf an NFL team(s) wants Walker, why would he want to stay in the XFL?1. Keep P.J. Walker at all costs
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, there was a quarterback named Jim "King" Corcoran who decided early on that he would rather be a star in the minor leagues than a benchwarmer in the NFL. He went on to play in just about every minor league of the era: the ACFL, the Continental league, the Seaboard league, and finally the WFL.
The XFL is paying quarterbacks pretty good money to play in this league, and it gives them national media exposure. If Walker goes back to the NFL and ends up back in the same boat he was in before, being booted on and off the practice squad, he'll forever be "that guy who used to be in the XFL."
We don't know how any of these quarterbacks are going to transition back to the NFL. The AAF's quarterbacks haven't—heck, other than Perez, most of them haven't even done much in the XFL! But the XFL offers a comfortable salary, a shorter season and national exposure. Assuming the league can get a rights deal that ensures long-term success, it's actually a pretty good deal unless you're convinced you can get a upper-seven-figure salary as a starter or vet backup in the NFL.

Money. That's how the CFL keeps their quarterbacks.MidwestJimmy wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:45 amIf an NFL team(s) wants Walker, why would he want to stay in the XFL?1. Keep P.J. Walker at all costs

That would be a dangerous game for the XFL to play, increasing salaries for QBs or whomever just to try to keep them out of the NFL. Especially before the league gets a TV deal that would keep them flush with cash. The prestige of playing in the NFL is going to win out for most players; getting into that ecosystem, even as a backup, and trying to parlay that into million-dollar deals still may be more enticing than whatever single-year money figure the XFL could offer.Tank55 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 3:36 pmMoney. Walker showing that playing well in the XFL can get you a spot in the NFL would be beneficial for the league, anyway, in attracting quality players and getting fans to take notice of the quality of players in the league.

Letting the stars born on the platform you've created walk away is dangerous as well. Definitely a balancing act.
I'm a little surprised you think quarterbacks won't respond to money. That's not really how we see it play out in the CFL, is it?
What kind of contract do we think Walker is going to command from an NFL team?

I don't know the particulars of the CFL contracts, but are they really at great risk of the NFL poaching those players? We don't see a ton of CFL-to-NFL movement each year outside of QBs.Tank55 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 8:34 pm Letting the stars born on the platform you've created walk away is dangerous as well. Again, the prestige and the opportunity to play in the NFL and succeed there trumps all (and yes, they'll get paid well there too whether they start or not). You'd have to pay so far above and beyond what the NFL would offer these guys to get them to stay that at some point, it wouldn't be worth the money. It's not like Walker is a single draw either with TV ratings or attendance.

Last time around Tommy Maddox went to Pittsburg and had success. These guys are looking for an NFL paycheck and they pay 5 times the amount for a backup. I wouldn't worry, there might be guys who stay for shorter season (health) and the money is good enough on a longer term deal, and they still get to be the man. Some might even like the area they're in and not want to move.johnnyangryfuzzball wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 11:17 amThe XFL is paying quarterbacks pretty good money to play in this league, and it gives them national media exposure. Regardless, there will be another superstar that steps up and catches the attention of fans next season too. The franchises will start to have their own identity and the fans will bond that way. It's the sports world in the free agency era.

Depends on your definition of a ton, but there are quite a few CFL players getting signed to the NFL every year. Often times, skilled positions don't end up working out and they are back in the CFL within a year (Jordan Williams Lambert, Weston Dressler for example).GregParks wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:55 pmI don't know the particulars of the CFL contracts, but are they really at great risk of the NFL poaching those players?
