My memory might be bad, but I don’t think so. There were so many rumors flying back then though, and everyone wanted a team for some reason.

I seem to remember DC and San Antonio as potential expansion teams that were floated around that time.

The longtime wrestling mogul has scheduled a news conference in New York City to unveil the league that is expected to play outdoors in eight U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Miami, Orlando and Washington D.C.

Oh yeah, and the same week on Smackdown Edge and Christian coming out in Raider jerseys, only to go back and switch to Ravens jerseys. Good times.MarkNelson wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 11:41 amXFL 2001 did them one at a time, and their timeline was similar to XFL 2023. Mind you, in 2001 there was at least one foible where they announced San Jose but the stadium deal collapsed and the league switched to San Francisco PAC Bell Park. Karma paid them back for this change by crashing their blimp into Oakland.
I would not be surprised to see a series of team announcements, either individually or in batches. Keep in mind I have no solid info on this. I am guessing.

We should hear more about the June 1st St. Louis press event this week. I can confirm the league is beginning to tip off local press. The only thing we will not be tipped off on is the exact details of the announcement.

Re: Teams/cities coming June 1st
Washington and Detroit, but they were exploring those cities for 2002—it never got to the point of formal announcement because the league folded.
Miami was the target for the CFL back in the 1990s. Now there's a story: the team started as the Las Vegas Posse in 1994. Nobody showed up to their games and they were largely a vehicle to provide Sacramento with a rival closer to their home city. The Posse's majority owner Nick Mileti had never owned a sports team outside of Cleveland and never really seemed to care about the Posse. So after the '94 season, the Posse were not viable. So the CFL tries to orchestrate a deal to sell the team to Marvin Fishman and move it to Milwaukee. No deal, as the Brewers wouldn't let the CFL use County Stadium. Then, Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson actually came very close to happening, twice... but Mileti and his partners started playing games to prevent the sale, and the CFL was too worried about looking like a small market. Then, Orlando... but the owners that were supposed to show up there never showed up to the press conference that was going to introduce the new team. Finally, they settled on Miami. By that point it was too late to bring the team back in '95 so the plan was to do it in '96. The CFL decided to get out of the American market before the Miami Manatees (I kid thee not) had a chance to play. (The whole American CFL fiasco was never really anything more than an expansion fee grab anyway, but that's another long story.)

Re: Teams/cities coming June 1st
Oh yeah CFL USA is basically the whole of the book End Zones and Border Wars. Got it real cheap a few years ago as a companion piece and now I bring it out every so often. Got some funny stuff in there:
To Carlos Huerta at a Posse autograph signing: "So you going pro this year?"
The Shreveport disaster: "Half these people can't even spell Saskatchewan!"
Literally having to tape the Liberty Bowl together to make a playable field, and it was still off by quite a few yards
And is not at all kind to either Bruce McNall or the Gliebermans
Wasn't Miami originally a target of USFL1.0, which is how Howard Schnellenberger left the U?

More from Karraker backing up much of what we've already heard.
- Cities, teams, and logos coming June 1
- "BattleHawks will be part of the new XFL"
- Becht "inside favorite" to coach St Louis; Haslett "apparently going to wind up in Seattle"
- All teams will live and practice in Arlington.
- Cities are Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Seattle, Vegas, DC, St. Louis, Orlando.
Co-host (Michelle Smallmon) pushes back on players living in Arlington, says it matters to have the players living in the city.
Both hosts celebrate the death of the Vipers.

XFL content starts at 01:47. I question how much of this is confirmed independently or if he's just reading the same things we are.

Re: Teams/cities coming June 1st
I don't have an issue with playing in X, practicing in Y location. The Orlando Apollo's did that in the AAF, but alot of people gave them s##t for it - ie amateur, cheap rushed. That is all true, but if that's necessary and saves money - do it. That being said it comes across as an AAF vibe, AAF also choose cities based on cost to operate and lease availablity more so than best for league chances. It's clear that Texas is offering low cost to operate (esp WC Ins I'm sure) when an 8 team league has 3 teams in one state.Tank55 wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 4:27 pm More from Karraker backing up much of what we've already heard.

I agree. Either properly fund a football league or don't. I think it's short sighted to try to split the difference like these leagues are doing.
