>> HOUSTON — The USFL on Wednesday announced that Curtis Johnson has been hired as the new head coach of the Houston Gamblers.

Johnson is a long-time NFL veteran offensive assistant coach and also spent four seasons as the head coach at Tulane. He immediately assumes duties from Kevin Sumlin.

"We’re very excited for Coach Johnson to bring his 35 years of experience improving players at the professional and collegiate levels to the USFL family as the new Houston Gamblers head coach," said Daryl Johnston, the USFL's Executive Vice President of Football Operations. "Coach Johnson has been on the USFL head coach radar, so when Coach Sumlin recently informed us that he would be stepping down, I immediately called Curtis. We’re thrilled that he enthusiastically embraced the challenge to be the Gamblers head coach." <<

I would say not a top pick but serviceable and they had to move quickly... which they did.

>> This is cool: the USFL has hired former New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson as the head coach of its Houston Gamblers franchise. Johnson’s coaching career took off with the Saints from 2006 to 2011, when he was hired as head coach of the Tulane Green Wave; he later returned to New Orleans as a senior offensive assistant from 2017 to 2021, though Dennis Allen didn’t retain him after taking over as head coach.

Now Johnson is running his own team again. The Gamblers compete in the USFL’s South division and are looking to make some noise after a 3-7 debut under head coach Kevin Sumlin last year. <<

>> Curtis Johnson’s first coaching job was way back in 1984 as an assistant at a high school in Idaho.

Johnson, a New Orleans native who grew up in St. Rose, has been on somebody’s sideline every year since then. Well, except this past season when the New Orleans Saints — under first-year coach Dennis Allen — didn’t bring him back as receivers coach.

Johnson spent the year dealing with his health, co-hosting a local radio sports talk show and watching football games on television instead of from the sideline.

“It was very different,” Johnson said. ”It was the first time I really had a chance to watch other teams. I would find myself coaching and yelling at the TV.

“CALL A TIMEOUT!”

Now Johnson gets a chance to call his own timeouts again. The Houston Gamblers of the USFL announced Wednesday that Johnson will be the franchise’s next head coach.

Former Saints coach Sean Payton, who Johnson coached under during two different stints in New Orleans, recommended Johnson to Gamblers’
executive vice president of football operations Daryl Johnston.<<

I think he'll work fine... likelya better hit in NOLA but that's the way it goes.
