Tiebreakers...

Post by LtCmdrData »

One thing I have not heard a word about, but that likely will be quite relevant at the end of the USFL season, is the necessity for tiebreaker(s) to determine the 4 playoff teams. How are they handling that? If NFL rules are being followed in the league, then some species of tiebreak procedure similar to the NFL's should be employed. I would propose the following setup:

-If 2 teams are tied for either division's title, or for 2nd place (based on W/L %), go with the following tiebreaks:

1. Head-to-head
2. Best division record
3. Biggest points differential (net points) in division games
4. Biggest points differential in all games
5. Best combined ranking among division teams in points scored & points allowed in all games
6. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games
7. Most net TD's in division games
8. Most net TD's in all games
9. Mike Pereira and Dean Blandino each pick a team, and then have an MMA cage match. Winner's team gets in/becomes division champ. Joke. Coin flip if it gets that far...

Adapted from the NFL site. Note that I would move point differential above combined ranking, and also added net TD's for division games. Conference records, etc would not be necessary, as there are only 2 divisions. Strength of victory/schedule would be redundant, as both teams play the same opponents.

-If 3 or 4 teams are involved for the division title and/or 2nd place, go with the above, Provided: that tiebreak 1 would be a head-to-head sweep by 1 team over the other 2 (or 3). If you have that, then the sweeping team advances over the team it swept. If you don't, then you go as far down as needed to eliminate one team. In either case, you then start back at the top with the teams remaining. In this usage, you would find the division winner first above all else.

To determine the best combined ranking among division (or league) team's in points scored and points allowed, add a team's position in the two categories, and the lowest score wins. For example, if Team A is first in points scored and second in points allowed, its combined ranking is "3." If Team B is third in points scored and first in points allowed, its combined ranking is "4." Team A then wins the tiebreaker. If two teams are tied for a position, both teams are awarded the ranking as if they held it solely. For example, if Team A and Team B are tied for first in points scored, each team is assigned a ranking of "1" in that category, and if Team C is third, its ranking will still be "3" (Source: NFL site).

For the '23 draft, the teams in the playoffs go 5-8. The Championship Game winner goes 8th, loser 7th, and the playoff game losers go 5th and 6th, worst record going first, with in-season head-to-head as the tiebreak for the latter. Those not in the playoffs go 1-4 in the order, worst record going first. The above tiebreaks for 2 intra-conference teams, and head-to-head for 2 inter-conference, are used. For 3 or more teams, find the best team in each division, as needed, and then go with head-to-head in the same manner as listed, supra.

After the selection order for the first round of the draft has been determined, clubs originally involved in two-club ties will alternate positions from round to round. In the cases of ties that originally involved three-or-more clubs, the club at the top of a tied segment in a given round will move to the bottom of the segment for the next round, while all other clubs in the segment move up one place. This rotation will continue throughout the draft. (from the NFL page)

Everybody got that? That's what I propose, if nobody thought of all this. Thoughts are welcome...
To the XFL & USFL. May those leagues run forever... :D

Using all my bureaucracy in the last post, if the season were to end at this moment (16 May 22, 2300 EDT)...

The NJ Generals & Philadelphia Stars would represent the North in the playoffs...
...and the Birmingham Stallions & NO Breakers would go from the South (Breakers beat Bandits head-to-head).

Panthers beat Maulers (intra-division), and Maulers beat Gamblers (inter-division). Draft picks 1-4 would thus be 1. Gamblers 2. Maulers 3. Panthers 4. Bandits (since you pick in reverse order of record)...

I hope it got it all correct lol... and note this is just if the season ended today... ;)
