A source close to the league let me in that Saturday games showed a mid to high single digit ratings increase making this the first time a spring league has seen a ratings increase. Further more KPI’s are looking very healthy. Something positive to end the weekend. #USFL

Not really sure what this means.. TSL had fluctuating ratings last season and had it's highest rated game the week before the championship. Even XFL 1.0 after bottoming out at 1.5 million viewers drew 2.3 million for the Million Dollar Game.

I think it means what it says. "Saturday games showed a mid to high single digit ratings increase making this the first time a spring league has seen a ratings increase. Further more KPI’s are looking very healthy. "

KPI= Key Performance Indicators.

We'll see if its true or not in a few days.

SBJ - Fox takes long view

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/J ... /USFL.aspx

>> Fox Sports executives are much more interested in positioning the new football league against more established spring leagues spanning all sports rather than all of the other previous football leagues that have come and gone.

“The USFL has to establish that it belongs in the same category as sports that have been part of the spring calendar for many years,” he said. “It’s all about trying to prove that the USFL is in the same class as sports that are going out there and double or tripling their rights deals.”

F1, for example, has gone to market seeking $75 million per year — a figure 15 times higher than its current deal. F1’s April 24 race averaged 1.003 million viewers on ESPN at 9 a.m. Fox’s Pittsburgh Maulers-Philadelphia Stars game at noon on April 23 averaged 1.056 million viewers.

Last year, NBC kept the Premier League rights for $450 million per year. NBC’s Brentford-Tottenham game on April 23 started at 12:30 p.m. ET and averaged 631,000 viewers. The next day, NBC’s coverage of the Boston Breakers-Tampa Bay Bandits kicked off at 3 p.m. ET and averaged 812,000 viewers. <<

This to me was clear form get go as Winter start would clearly provide for better league ratings. But Fox (and to lesser extent NBC) want to fill spring (for their own reasons). Said this in Dec and sticking to it.

Re: SpringFB vs NHL TV ratings

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/e ... viewership

>> TNT, which accounted for the bulk of the league’s cable TV schedule this season with 51 games, averaged 361,000 viewers, an increase of 29% from games on NBCSN in 2020-21 and 24% from 2019-20.
~
On the Disney networks, the NHL averaged 469,000 viewers for 16 games on ESPN and 856,000 viewers for 10 on ABC. Linear viewership is a small part of the story, however, as regular-season hockey is primarily a digital play for Disney.

Season Networks Games Viewers
2021-22 ABC/ESPN/TNT 77 460,000
2020-21 NBC/NBCSN 103 391,000
2019-20 NBC/NBCSN 98 398,000
2018-19 NBC/NBCSN 112 424,000
2017-18 NBC/NBCSN 105 417,000
2016-17 NBC/NBCSN 106 474,000
<<

Focusing on the Warner portion which is a 7yr deal worth $225mm a yr, small for a big 4 league but a big step up from NHL's prior deal. Its on TNT/TBS but HBOMax will stream some in future.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/27/turner- ... ights.html

>> The NHL and WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports agreed to a deal that will see the network land its second-tier hockey rights for more than $1 billion over seven years. Turner will land three Stanley Cups, one of the NHL conference playoff rounds (ESPN has first rights) and the Winter Classic as part of the package, Turner Sports announced Tuesday.

With the NHL agreeing to return to ESPN for over $400 million per year, and Turner now expected to pay $225 million per year, the NHL increases its rights fees to more than $625 million, up from roughly $300 million in agreements with NBCUniversal and, for streaming, Disney. <<

I think NHL is a good league to compare to as well as MLS when looking at what USFL (or XFL 3.0 for that matter) can potential be worth. Adjusting for # of games etc...

At 1/3 the Warner-NHL deal that's $75mm, in short term that's good $$.

Warner Discovery looking to prime time sports

Post by 4th&long »

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/warner ... 235262668/

Just another article illustrating that nets/streamers are looking to prime time sports.

>> But the sports, he acknowledges, will be the big hook. With NCAA March Madness, NHL, NBA and MLB games, he says, Warner Bros. Discovery is poised to deliver larger audiences than many broadcast offerings in spring and summer, thanks to the migration of audiences for scripted series to streaming venues.

“The marketplace needs more high-quality supply” of ratings and audience, given the number of consumers who choose to stream their favorite scripted shows on demand, says the executive. “This supply of our top-tier inventory is much needed in this marketplace.” <<

Sports bar TV report: at a local establishment…I count 37 TVs. Not one on @Dbacks
vs Cubs. There are at least two on LSU-Vandy baseball and two or three on a USFL game from last weekend.

I have no idea who that is as a loathe soccer. But on a tangent - MLS has teams in all major markets, 2 in some, great attendance, and ratings still suck.

He’s the greatest soccer player in history, he’ll bump ratings a an insane amount wherever he’s on TV
