BBJ - Birmingham should pursue USFL for Protective Stadium

>> The United States Football League is coming back to life, and many hope the Birmingham Stallions will be part of the comeback.

We wholeheartedly agree with efforts to breathe new life into the Legion Field property with a primary goal of revitalizing and uplifting the surrounding area. But we don’t think attempting to maintain the aging stadium’s status as a professional football venue is the best avenue to do that.

For that to happen, we first need to convince the USFL to come to the Magic City. The new Protective Stadium offers the best avenue for that, but we think there’s a good way the Legion Field area can also win, even without hosting the games. <<

We are starting to see cities discuss the USFL - this is free publicity and should grow. This is what using the USFL name brings to the table.

As I brought up last week, and in the thread from a year and half ago, Randall Woodfin was one of the first to lobby for an XFL expansion team, and he did with Protective Stadium in mind.

Only hangup is you might wanna see it tested out first, and being that teams/venues are going to come in August (provided everything stays on schedule) and UAB won't kick it off until October you might either do Legion Field or have a split. The XFL (or USFL) could have similar issues with San Diego and the new SDSU stadium.

The city of Birmingham or it’s fans never seem to be shy about begging for another shot with a new football league.

And yet their attendance is usually quite mediocre.

Of course, you think about it and most of these other leagues have never really played up that they're a team from Alabama. If it were me, I'd play it up. Make Birmingham the Football Capital of the South again. Send out those Alabama Rowdies to play in front of a raucous bunch of rednecks.

Instead, we get generic names like Stallions, Thunderbolts, Barracudas, Iron. Iron was probably as close as they got to something culturally tied to Birmingham (see also arena football's Steeldogs).
