Week 8 AAF Attendance Figures/Total Season Numbers

Post by MikeMitchell »

Week 8 AAF Attendance Figures

Orlando @ Memphis- 12,417

- Despite all the Manziel hype. It hasn't really shown much difference in ticket sales. Less fans at this game than last week (13,758)... Memphis has been consistently in this range all season, averaging just under 13 thousand fans per game. A poor showing by this market but not as bad as the others. Memphis has one home game remaining in week 10 against another team eliminated from playoff contention in Atlanta.

San Diego @ Salt Lake City- 8,405

- The best case for relocation if the league moves towards a second season. SLC is a weak tv and football market to begin with, and these numbers bare that out. Their home opener in week 3 drew 10 thousand fans. Since then, they have been in the 8 to 9 thousand range for every home game. Throw in the bush league appearance of not being able to even have the team's logo on the field. This is a team that shouldn't be returning for year 2. Salt Lake's final home game of the season will be in week 10, when they host The Commanders.

Atlanta @ Birmingham- 17,328

- The Iron have been fairly consistent in terms of attendance. With the exception of the week 4 Tornado issues, which saw only 6,000 fans in attendance. The Iron have settled in in this 14 to 17k range. Still below what they should be but way better than Arizona, Salt Lake, Atlanta, Arizona and Memphis. Birmingham finishes their season on the road. So their average regular season attendance for the season was 14,361.

Arizona @ San Antonio- 23,504

- Slight disappointment despite being the league's best drawing team. This is down from last week's high water mark of 30,345. This is the Commanders lowest attended game of the season. The Commanders are at home in week 9 against Memphis. In a 12noon game on CBS. The division title is still up fro grabs. So it's possible that they may not host another game this season. Lost in the ineptitude of Salt Lake, is how poorly Arizona has drawn thus far. Averaging about 9 thousand fans per game, despite being a contender and having great weather.

Thus far, ony 3 teams figure to have a chance to average 20 thousand fans per game. San Antonio, Orlando and San Diego. These are the only 3 teams over 15k per game as well. The league's average attendance per game is currently 15,291.

Those figures aren't really all that bad given the fact it's a new venture. Given time....maybe that improves. The original AFL averaged in that 15,000-17,000 range it's first year. Guess we'll never know. Kudos to all you devoted fans out there.....particular to Orlando, San Antonio, Birmingham and Memphis.....the four top franchise-lashed markets. And you too San Diego.....in light of losing the Chargers after a half century of support.....they came out for the AAF.

The one issue with markets like Arizona and others had besides not being traditionally strong football markets like say Texas or Florida is the size of their stadiums. 9,000 people scattered in a 60,000 seat stadium just looks awful. Atlanta drew weakly but having 10k in a 20k stadium plays better on tv. Memphis and Birmingham games looked poor because of the size of the crowds in comparison to the stadium. San Diego or San Antonio’s 20k crowds looked better in 60k range stadiums than say 8 thousand fans in 70k stadiums.

The atmosphere for most of these games didn’t come off well. That’s part of the league’s fault for not enhancing the live experience in the stadiums. The games didn’t really feel like events.
