>> As The Alliance did last year in San Antonio, XFL will have 4 preseason games near end of camp at TDECU Stadium (U. of Houston). Jan. 20 DC vs. Seattle, 10 am; Dallas vs. St. Louis, 3:30 pm. Jan. 21 Los Angeles vs. Houston, 10 am; Tampa Bay vs. New York, 3:30 pm. <<

The latter would seem to be that test game for FOX we were talking about a few weeks back.

It'd be nice to have one game on ABC or FOX as a showcase but I see why it wouldn't fly, and unless you've either got Lebron or it's August and there's been no NFL since the Super Bowl there's really no point.

It's gettin' hot in here...and we about to burn 'em up!

Looks like the 2020 XFL champion will have at least two losses ;)

Why on Earth would they have teams i.e. DC & Seattle, who face off against one another on opening day play each other in the pre-season???????????

The networks wanted that. They want to be as close as possible to a test run for week 1.

For broadcast purposes, it's important to do a "dry run" during these preseason games, especially if the networks are banking on technological innovations to help draw in viewers. That's not even to speak of the necessity of coaches/players/refs wanting some live game work to prep for the season and get used to the new rules.

As much as die-hard XFL fans would love to see these games in some form, it's in the XFL's best interests to not air them anywhere. Fans should be drawn to the first regular season game to see what the product will look like...if they give that away before the first game, for many the intrigue won't be there. And it's not worth wasting that first week's rating by showing these preseason games online or wherever else they might be shown. I'd even advocate not bringing fans in for the games, either.

Why do teams who open against each other in the preseason scrimmage against each other a couple days before? Same deal.

And the last thing anybody wants in week 1 is more punts than points and first downs at a premium like it's runs in a Verlander/de Grom matchup so if this lessens the possibility of that (although the rules take care of it for the most part) the better.

Or broadcasters who don't know the players. Just another reminder that this is a television product, first and foremost.

Well stated, its practice - no need to show dirty laundry to public - they do they same even for new NFL broadcasters, this is of course ALL new.

Timely you mention the latter, the soon-to-be-really-rich Tony Romo's first game was technically a shadow run with Nantz of the Cowboys/Cardinals HOF game in 2017. His first TV game was supposed to be Chiefs/Seahawks from CLink on 8/25 (oddly enough on the one year anniversary of the hit that sent him into retirement in the same stadium), but his daughter was sick or something so the Raiders/Titans opener ended up his first TV game. Exhibit (insert here) how dry runs come in handy.
