Coronavirus & XFL

Post by Adz43 » Tue Mar 03, 2020 5:16 am

Hope I’m wrong on this but can’t help imagining how difficult it will be to draw fans for the foreseeable future. For instance I could easily see Seattle’s attendance plummeting hard for any remaining home games (haven’t glanced at schedule) in light of state of Washington news...

Aside from fans choosing to stay home, the XFL may also be forced to cancel some games. We will wait an see how this goes, but I have to say that the news is trending for this virus to take hold within North America in a greater way.

The main way the virus has been combated in other countries is by ordering everyone to stay home. Not only would this affect fans, it would also affect teams and staffs, who would also be told to isolate themselves. I hope it does not come to this, but do not be surprised if it does.

I'll also note, though, that so far, those efforts have failed to stop the spread. It seems the most logical solution at this point is to focus on preventing the most vulnerable from getting it, while allowing it to run its course among the rest of society.

As I noted in the other thread, the coronavirus does not have a substantial effect on younger people. There are some reports out of Australia noting that children appear completely resistant to it. The XFL, of course, targets a younger audience and demographic.

I don't see the XFL canceling games or doing anything of that sort until the NBA, MLS, NHL and MLB start doing that and right now, all four of those leagues (and the NFL too) have been in close contact with the CDC, but also going about business as usual. All of those leagues are monitoring things, sure, but until they are told otherwise, it's business as usual. Same for the XFL. I am sure that Oliver Luck, Jeffrey Pollack and company are monitoring things and are in constant contact with the CDC, but are going about it as business as usual.

Technicality: The XFL won't cancel games. Games would be canceled by governments.

Just because young people are not dying from COVID-19 does not mean they won't be able to spread it. It is the spread of the virus that is concerning to government. The death rate will follow the spread-rate.

From LA Times sportswriter Kevin Baxter:

“Sports teams in L.A. County, including @LAFC and the @LAGalaxy, have been warned they may be asked to cancel games or play them in empty stadiums after the county declared a health emergency Wednesday to deal with the coronavirus “

Officials went ahead to warn that this was a worse-case scenario.

It just goes to show one way that this could go down.
Fan of the XFL from the beginning. You may remember me from the original XFLboard.

Speaking of which, I just came across a report that a concessions vendor at the last Dragons game has tested positive for the virus.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2 ... ronavirus/

It's a little scary, but the good news is that Seattle's health department thinks it's unlikely he spread the disease to anyone else. The bad news is that it could adversely affect the Dragons' attendance for the rest of the season.
