The Ryan Mallett/Marc Trestman connection

The ‘Final Score’ podcast was out at The XFL Summer Showcase in Tampa. They posted a ton of audio interviews with the players that worked out like BJ Daniels, Matt Jones and Ryan Mallett. Also interviews with Oliver Luck and Marc Trestman. It’s in the link above and can be heard around the 1 hour and 20 minute mark.

Ryan Mallett came off really well. He’s got a bad reputation. Some of it earned. Mallett talked about being down to his lowest weight in years. He lost nearly 30 pounds, and he talked about how much he missed football being on the sidelines last year. He only had a tryout with Washington during the fall when they were hit with injuries.

Marc Trestman was also rather insightful during his interview. He talked about the level of success, quarterbacks he worked with, had in the later stages of their careers. Steve Young at 29 in the NFL and Rich Gannon at 34 with the Raiders.

This was all tied into the discussion about Ryan Mallett. Trestman mentioned coaching Mallett in Baltimore. Ryan also mentioned accepting the invite because of his familiarity with Trestman.

It doesn’t guarantee anything but this looks like a potential “allocation” in the making.

The music the show uses in the background during the interviews is so annoying. The quote by Mallett was very cool. Reporter asked him “How do you match the hunger of the other players working out at the showcase” Mallet responded by saying “They need to match mine”.

Mallett is an intriguing player. 31 years old. He looks the part and then some. 6’6 Quarterback with a rocket arm. He’s been largely a disappointment as a pro. Attitude and accuracy issues have been his downfall.

I remember when he came out for the 2011 draft. Some had Mallett as a first round talent. The Patriots drafted him in the third round. According to Michael Lombardi at the time, New England had Mallett rated as the best quarterback in that draft.

That was a unique quarterback class at the time. The quarterbacks ranged from Cam Newton, Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick, to Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder.

I think that players like Ryan Mallett and Landry Jones are good enough to be backup quarterbacks in the NFL, but their starter windows are closed.

The point that Trestman made about quarterbacks developing later in their careers is a good one. It’s a position where you can absolutely get better over time. Another player he cited was recently retired Josh McCown. A former 3rd round pick, who washed out of the NFL, almost retired, resurfaced for the Colonials in The United Football League, and then had a resurgence in his 30’s. Mallett, if he has his head on straight, could end up following the same path.

Kurt Warner can be the guy you sell to the media, but McCown is the guy you sell to players like Mallet. He used that UFL run as a launching point and goes on to make another $34 MILLION in the NFL. Maybe things play out the same without that opportunity, but maybe not. He's on record as saying the game reps he got in the UFL were helpful.

That’s right on the money. McCown is the perfect player to point to. He represents revival.

Kurt Warner is the selling point, moreso for the unknown player and the player who has played in lower levels of football. How an unknown if given a shot, can develop and become a star if he has the opportunity.

Josh McCown is the selling point for players who have had starting experience in the NFL, but have washed out of the league. Kind of a modern day Tommy Maddox example. It’s how you sell Paxton Lynch, Landry Jones, Johnny Manziel, Ryan Mallet and others like them to the media and to the agents, players and followers of the league.

McCown played for a decade in the NFL after his UFL run.

Pieces are falling into place.

Trestman-Mallett, Stoops-Jones, June-Manziel.

The above three pairings all have history working together. All three quarterbacks could really revive their careers in the XFL, and put themselves back in the starter conversation.
