The Athletic: West Virginia's Kenny Robinson Jr. to be first college player in the XFL

This is a column (subscription required) from Andy Staples of The Athletic revealing that West Virginia S Kenny Robinson Jr. will be the first college player to enter the XFL Draft. He was a first-team All-Big 12 safety last year but got kicked off the team this year because of an academic code of conduct violation. He chose entering the XFL Draft over transferring.

Great news. We know thanks to this board that Robinson worked out for the XFL in secret. He could be drafted high in the defensive backs draft.

That’s huge news. The XFL kept quiet any college player involvement in the Showcases but this is a first step in college player recruitment. Robinson’s name was known here for his involvement but not much press about it. He’s a quality player too. So it’s not like some 4th string long snapper.

With the XFL. It’s about getting to year two. There’s hesitancy for pro and college players to take the plunge until the league proves itself to be viable. Agents and players are less likely now to take a chance on the XFL in year one. They don’t want to commit and have the rug pulled out from them.

If the XFL gets to year two and proves to be a strong alternative. More college and pro players will entertain playing in the league.

Will he be a 1st round pick in the "defensive backfield" rounds of the draft? He should go high right?

I would project him no later than the top three rounds in the phase 4 draft(defensive backs). He will be a starter in the league. So teams might address corner first but he’ll be one of if not the first safety off the board.

So will being in the XFL prevent him from being drafted in the NFL? I could see him play one year in the XFL and then jump to the NFL if he is drafted as a 1st or 2nd round pick in 2021.

The XFL posted this video on social media. Robinson can play a season in the XFL and then enter the NFL draft if he chooses when he is eligible.

Quote from The Athletic that Pro Football Talk has also picked up on.
Robinson was considered a likely draft choice based on his play last season and will still be eligible to be drafted by an NFL team next year. He told Andy Staples of TheAthletic.com that he thinks that playing against professional competition can raise his draft stock.

“Now they can see how I hold up mentally and physically,” Robinson said. “They’ll see me playing against guys who have actually been in the NFL and done it.”

Adrian McPherson and Michael Hawkins (who played for Stoops at OU) both left and played a season in the Arena League, then were drafted in the NFL in 2005--Hawk I think was actually eligible to be drafted in 2004 but declined while he was playing with the Desperados.

No. The only restriction on entering the NFL Draft is that you must be three years removed from high school graduation. A player can play professionally at any time in that span. It's not like the NCAA.
